TACOMA, Wash. - Two armed suspects arrested before the start of the destructive protest Sunday night in Tacoma were dressed all in black and riot gear as they attempted to access a roof edge directly related to the demonstration, police said Monday.

The two suspects and a third person were spotted on the roof of a building in the 700 block of South Commerce Street by a resident there who then called 911, said Wendy Haddow of the Tacoma police.

Haddow said the three had accessed the secured building and then accessed a secured stairwell. They were attempting to break through a locked gate that keeps people away from the outer edge area of the roof top when they were spotted, she said.

Police arrived at the scene and officers caught two of the three suspects. The third suspect managed to get away.

The two arrested were dressed in all black, had riot gear on and balaclavas on. One, a 32-year-old man, was armed with a handgun and one, a 36-year-old woman, was armed with knives and batons. The third suspect is still outstanding.

"It is my understanding that the motivation of the three suspects to break into the building and access the locked roof edge were directly related to the demonstration, but they were apprehended prior to the start of the event," Haddow said.
