Former Attorney General Eric Holder spoke at a Brookings Institute forum on court reform on Monday.

Holder urged Democrats to pack the Supreme Court during his presentation. Holder, a far left Obama appointee, told the audience the federal courts are packed with ideologues “who consistently reach rulings based on their stunted mindsets.”

By this, he means conservative judges who follow the US Constitution.

Former Attorney General Eric Holder urged Democrats on Monday to pack the Supreme Court in response to what he called a crisis of “legitimacy” brought about by the appointment of a conservative majority.

Packing the Court would involve passing legislation to add seats to the nation’s highest judicial body, then using a simple Senate majority to fill the vacancies with liberals.

Holder was addressing a virtual seminar hosted by the Brookings Institution, “Is There a Path Forward for Court Reform?”

The left has shown interest in “reform” since President Donald Trump was able to appoint conservatives to the bench.

Holder began his presentation with what he called “three realities.” First, he said, “Democrats and progressives, are, and have been, uncomfortable with the acquisition and the use of power.” Republicans and conservatives, he said, were not.

Second, he said, the Supreme Court and other courts had been “political bodies.”

And third, he said, the Supreme Court had largely upheld the status quo in its decisions, “sometimes in a way that is inimical to our founding ideals.”

He said that the federal courts were stacked with “ideologues who consistently reach rulings based on their stunted mindsets.”

McConnell Caves On Preserving Filibuster After Two Democrats Signal 'No' On Eliminating

Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell (KY) has relented on a key demand that Democrats preserve the filibuster, after two Democratic senators - Joe Manchin (WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (AZ) - said they were against tossing out the policy which allows the minority party to block legislation by requiring 60 votes to advance most measures.

McConnell's refusal to ditch the filibuster had left the power-sharing agreement in a stalemate, as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) had rebuffed the idea of a guarantee, according to Bloomberg.

While both sides claimed victory, McConnell’s position was becoming untenable and risked provoking the Democrats into doing the opposite of what he wanted and eroding the filibuster out of the gate. There’s also potential risk down the line if Republicans engage in maximum obstruction and anger Manchin and Sinema.

So far, on cabinet nominees and on scheduling the impeachment trial, the two sides have managed to avoid a partisan impasse. For instance, Antony Blinken, President Joe Biden’s nominee to be secretary of state, is to be confirmed by the Senate at noon on Tuesday. -Bloomberg

"The legislative filibuster was a key part of the foundation beneath the Senate’s last 50-50 power-sharing agreement in 2001," wrote McConnell in a statement. "With these assurances, I look forward to moving ahead with a power-sharing agreement modeled on that precedent."

Schumer's team wasn't quite so cordial - saying in a statement: "We’re glad Senator McConnell threw in the towel and gave up on his ridiculous demand. We look forward to organizing the Senate under Democratic control and start getting big, bold things done for the American people."

Manchin and Sinema signaling that they won't vote to kill the filibuster essentially allowed McConnell to save face.

On Monday, Manchin told reporters that he "does not support throwing away the filibuster under any condition," while a spokesman for Sinema said she was also against getting rid of the rule.

As Bloomberg notes, Manchin's and Sienma's opposition to killing the filibuster indicates just how tenuous the Democrats' control of the chamber is - as they need all 50 Democrats in lockstep to overcome the 50-50 split (with Vice President Kamala Harris being the tie-breaker). Now, Democrats will need 10 Senate Republicans to join them on most bills unless a simple majority is needed.

Under the agreement in place in 2001, the last time the Senate was evenly split, both parties had an equal number of committee seats equal budgets for committee Republicans and Democrats, and the ability of both leaders to advance legislation out of committees that are deadlocked. But Democrats will hold the chairmanships and Schumer will set the agenda for the floor.

Some issues can be passed with a simple majority via a balky process known as budget reconciliation, but that method has limits on what can be included and when. Already, Democrats are weighing whether to use the process to bypass Republicans on a major virus relief package Schumer wants to send to the White House by mid-March, with a follow-on package later in the year. -Bloomberg

The Parler precedent? Lawsuit calls on Google to drop Telegram from app store, a week after Apple was targeted in the same way

A California court has been asked to force Google to remove Telegram from its Play store, over claims that the messenger app is used to incite violence. The legal challenge mirrors a similar suit brought against Apple.

Filed by Marc Ginsberg, a former US ambassador to Morocco, the lawsuit claims that the popular app is used to spread violence, extremism and anti-Semitism. Ginsberg’s non-profit, Coalition for a Safer Web (CSW), was also listed as a plaintiff.

The complaint notes that Google suspended Parler, a Twitter-like conservative microblogging site, from its app store due to some users expressing support for the violence that rocked the Capitol on January 6. According to Ginsberg, Telegram should receive the same treatment.

“Google has not taken any action against Telegram comparable to the action it has taken against Parler to compel Telegram to improve its content moderation policies,” the suit alleges.

Ginsberg and CSW filed a similar complaint last week against Apple, which, like Google, had scrubbed Parler from its app store following the unrest in the capital.

In that suit, the plaintiffs characterize Telegram as “the preferred neo-Nazi/white nationalist communications channel, fanning anti-Semitic and anti-black incitement during the current wave of protests across America.” The lawsuit claims that the app is quickly becoming a breeding ground for extremism as Parler users “migrate” to other apps.

The legal challenges are part of CWS’ stated mission of limiting “extremists’ access to internet infrastructure” and advocating for the “expeditious removal of extremist & terrorist incitement and instruction content from social media platforms.”

Telegram has seen a surge in new users after Big Tech firms such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube began aggressively policing content on their platforms earlier this month, purportedly in an effort to crack down on extremism.

The app, which uses end-to-end encryption for messages, reported over 500 million monthly users in the first week of January.

Although critics have painted the Telegram as a safe haven for right-wing extremists, the company has taken measures of its own to keep its platform free of hate. Last week it announced that it had “dozens” of channels suspended on its platform that had alleged ties to neo-Nazis and white supremacists.

Biden To Halt Oil, Gas Leasing On Federal Land

As previously reported, and as was just confirmed by the WSJ, President Biden on Wednesday will announce that he is halting all new oil and gas leasing on federal territory, "setting up a confrontation with the oil industry over the future of U.S. energy." And since this effectively will suspend all fracking on federal lands (albeit once the extension period expires), this means that contrary to his representations, Biden is in fact banning fracking despite his Aug 31, 2020 proclamation that “I am not banning fracking. Let me say that again. I am not banning fracking, no matter how many times Donald Trump lies about me."

As the WSJ reports, the Biden administration has drafted an order to impose the moratorium while it conducts a review of the federal oil and gas leasing program, in what is potentially a first step toward his campaign pledge to end future leases. The order is expected to be included in a package of measures across government aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and boosting land conservation, which is just another conduit to legitimize trillions in taxpayer spending under the guise of "fixing the environment", aka the oldest grift in the book, yet one which liberals and virtue-signalers fall for every single time.

In addition to the moratorium on oil and gas leasing, Biden is expected to set a goal of protecting 30% of federal land and water by 2030, the WSJ sources said. The president is also planning to re-establish a White House council of science advisers that was established during the Obama administration.

Biden vows to replace entire gov’t fleet of nearly 650K cars and trucks with electric vehicles

Sounds expensive

President Joe Biden vowed on Monday to replace the entire fleet of government cars and trucks with "clean electric vehicles" during his presidency as a way to lead the charge on climate issues and make good on his promise to launch a "clean energy revolution."

"The federal government also owns an enormous fleet of vehicles, which we're going to replace with clean electric vehicles made right here in America made by American workers creating … a million autoworker jobs and clean energy and vehicles that are net-zero emissions," Biden said during a signing ceremony for his new "Buy America" executive order.

"This will be the largest mobilization of public investment and procurement, infrastructure, and [research and development] since World War Two," he added.

The move will affect more than 645,000 cars and trucks currently owned by the federal government, according to the General Services Administration, and is expected to cost at least $20 billion. Roughly one-third of the government vehicles are operated by the U.S. Postal Service.

CNBC noted that the initiative will be difficult and costly, given the fact that very few companies in America are currently manufacturing completely electric vehicles.

"There are currently only a handful of all-electric vehicles being assembled in the U.S. Tesla, General Motors and Nissan Motor produce EVs domestically, while Ford Motor and others have announced plans to do some," the news outlet noted.

But some believe the industry is about to go through a transformation — and quickly.

"The current offerings are pretty slim, but the industry's about to unleash an avalanche of new product, and a lot of it built in North America," Kristin Dziczek, vice president of industry, labor, and economics at the Center for Automotive Research, said in an interview with CNBC. "Just about every U.S. plant is going to have a hybrid or electric product."

GSA reported that as of July 2020, only 3,215 of the government-owned cars or trucks were electric vehicles.

Biden repeatedly touted plans to shift the country away from gas-powered vehicles while on the campaign trail last year.

In July, he suggested as a part of a $2 trillion climate plan to completely outlaw new production of light- and medium-duty gas-powered vehicles through the implementation of rigorous new fuel economy standards.

While that drastic action has not yet been taken, it has only been days since Biden was sworn in to office, and it is clear that he intends to make top-down enforcement of clean energy initiatives a priority of his administration.

“After two impeachments, lengthy inter-branch investigations, and most recently, the horrific attack on our nation’s capital, it is clear that the partisan divide between Democrats and Republicans does not serve a single American,” the letter states.

The letter highlights some areas where the freshman legislators believe there could be some common ground.

The caustic attacks made by Democrat and Progressive leadership – as well as their rank-and-file – in both chambers of Congress, extended to Republican, conservative, and Libertarian voters, and especially those who maintained support for former-President Trump.

Also signing the concession letter were several House Republicans who voted for one or both challenges to the slates of electors at the Electoral College including: Reps. Rep. Mazie Hirono went on Anderson Cooper to accuse the Republican senators of a “Big Lie“;

Dominion Voting Systems has alleged a “Big Lie” in their lawsuit against Rudy Giuliani;

Jake Tapper has used the term repeatedly on Twitter and on air to describe allegations of fraud in the 2020 election.

Bloomberg explained the analogy in September: “Adolf Hitler and Goebbels, his minister of propaganda, espoused a technique known as the ‘Big Lie,’ which involved repeating a colossal falsehood until the public came to believe it was true.”

Historians Timothy Snyder, Fiona Hill, and Ruth Ben-Ghiat have affirmed this usage of the term. Snyder whimsically explained to NPR how a “big lie” works: “The big lie fills in this space which used to be taken up by a lot of little truths, by hundreds and thousands and millions of little truths,” Snyder said. “We’ve let that slip away. And then the big lie comes in and fills in the gap.”

But that’s not what “Big Lie” means, nor where it came from.

Flashback: Biden’s DHS Nominee Tied to China, Visas-for-Sale Swamp Scandal

President Joe Biden’s nominee to head the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) used his government job in 2011 to green-light a citizenship-for-sale swamp scheme that included top Democrats, Chinese investors, and $141 million.

The scandal looms large in the confirmation battle for Biden’s nominee, Alejandro Mayorkas, in part because it revives old questions about what role, if any, then-Vice President Biden’s staff may have played in that project to deliver green cards to Chinese investors.

Career officials under Mayorkas at the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) agency tried to stop the 2011 giveaway of EB-5 green cards. A U.S. startup, GreenTech Automotive, and a visas-for-money outfit called Gulf Coast Management pushed the deal.

The McAuliffe-Nelson meeting took place in Joe Biden’s office suite, a source told Breitbart News in 2013:

Breitbart News has requested a list of the members of the Vice President’s staff who participated in this October 13, 2010 meeting with Terry McAuliffe, but the Vice President’s office has not responded as of the time this story was published. The circumstances surrounding the October 2010 meeting with members of Vice President Biden’s staff emphasize the very high level of political connections that characterized McAuliffe’s tenure as chairman of GreenTech Automotive.

Breitbart News added that “Rick Wade, who was hired as Senior Vice President and Head of China Operations at GreenTech Automotive in 2011, was at the time of the October 2010 meeting a top aide to Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke. Locke was a member of Vice President Biden’s Task Force on the Middle Class in 2009 and 2010.”

Rick Wade is currently a Senior Vice President at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The chamber is cheerleading some of Biden’s immigration policies. Wade’s bio there makes no mention of his executive role at GreenTech Automotive, which ended in 2013.

The Washington Free Beacon reported, “The White House and [Virginia gubernatorial candidate Terry] McAuliffe [D-VA] campaign are attempting to downplay a meeting between Terry McAuliffe and a White House official [Greg Nelson] in [October] 2010 about GreenTech.”

Greg Nelson, the White House official who hosted the meeting, sketched his job in a White House post:

Greg was Deputy Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement focused on public-private partnerships and setting up the White House’s private sector outreach, including as Deputy Director of the President’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness. He focused the first two years of the Administration on energy, innovation, and technology policy.

In August 2010, USCIS rejected the deal. That rejection decision was reversed, in large part, due to Mayorkas.

USCIS eventually approved the deal in September 2011, clearing the way for more than 100 Chinese nationals to receive initial approval for green cards — the first step in a path to U.S. citizenship — in return for investments that ultimately totaled $141 million in the now-bankrupt GreenTech Automotive,

Chinese national Charles Wang founded the company. He made sure to include McAuliffe as company chairman from 2010 to the end of 2012. McAuliffe is no minor figure — he was the chairman of the Democratic National Committee.

A subsequent report by the DHS’s Inspector General released in 2015 concluded that Mayorkas acted inappropriately to secure that reversal by subordinate DHS officials in September 2011.

Dr. Anthony Fauci Fails to Rule Out Double Masking for Those Who Are Vaccinated

Dr. Anthony Fauci, chief medical adviser for President Biden on the novel coronavirus, failed to rule out double masking — even after getting vaccinated — during an appearance Tuesday on America’s Newsroom.

Co-anchor Dana Perino asked Fauci for his thoughts on double masking, or the practice of wearing two masks at once, asking whether it would be necessary after receiving the vaccination for the Chinese coronavirus. Fauci, who appeared to express support for double masking this week, failed to rule it out.

“You know, we have to be really careful because we do know that the primary endpoint of the vaccine trials that show the 94 to 95 percent efficacy was really based on clinically apparent disease,” Fauci said, contending that experts do not yet know whether the vaccine “protects against infections so that people who can be vaccinated and feel very well and have no clinically apparent disease could still have virus in their nasal fairings because they got infected but they did not get any symptoms.”

Fauci then listed a “couple” of reasons to continue to wear a mask after receiving a vaccination, explaining that it could protect other people as the vaccinated individual could still have the virus in their nasal fairings. Fauci added that the U.S. should not pull back on public health measures until the vast majority of the population is vaccinated. He said that it will take “several months” to get the bulk of the population vaccinated but said availability for people in any category will likely come by April:

And just to be doubly sure, there are a couple of reasons to wear masks even after vaccination. One, you want to protect other people in case you have virus in your nasal fairings, and if you look in the community, there’s enough virus out there that before we start pulling back on things like public health measures, you want the overwhelming population vaccinated. And as I’ve said, the calculation — even though it’s still an estimate — would be somewhere between 70 and 85 percent of the population.

“It’s tough for people to think about light at the end of the tunnel with that,” Perino remarked before moving on.

Fauci briefly spoke about double masking during a Monday appearance on Today as well and appeared to support the idea, telling Savannah Guthrie that the practice “likely does” make a difference.

“You know, it likely does because I mean this is a physical covering to prevent droplets and virus to get in,” Fauci said.

“So if you have a physical covering with one layer, you put another layer on, it just makes common sense that it would likely be more effective and that’s the reason why you see people either double masking or doing a version of an N95,” he added:

“We don't want to get complacent.”

Others, including the New York Times, have promoted double masking in recent days.

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director did not feel as strongly about the efficacy of masks at the start of the pandemic, suggesting in a 60 Minutes interview last March that masks, in some ways, offer more psychological relief.

“Right now, people should not be walking, there’s no reason to be walking around with a mask,” Fauci said in the March interview.

“When you’re in the middle of an outbreak, wearing a mask might make people feel a little bit better and it might even block a droplet, but it’s not providing the perfect protection that people think that it is,” he continued, warning of the “unintended consequences.”

Shanghai Considers ‘Public Frozen Egg Bank’ as Chinese Birth Rate Plunges

China’s state-run Global Times reported Tuesday that Shanghai is exploring a “pilot” program in which the government helps women who wish to have children but are not in a position to have them to freeze their eggs for future use.

The proposal follows years of panic at the highest levels of the Communist Party over China’s declining birth rate, which has continued to plummet despite dictator Xi Jinping easing the repressive “one-child policy” that governed Chinese families in 2015. The Mao-era “one-child policy” made it illegal for a woman to have more than one child, resulting in mass forced abortions, sterilizations, and infanticides.

The Chinese Communist Party has boasted the anti-childbirth policy “prevented” 400 million births, a toll that includes both abortions and killings of infants. A significant percentage of those whose lives were “prevented” were girls, resulting in a devastating sex imbalance in the Chinese population that has contributed to the decline in the birth rate.

The Global Times described the proposed egg freezing program as a particular help for women who have undergone treatment for cancer, which often leads to infertility. The plan is reportedly the brainchild of attorney Qin Suo, a “professional woman who gave birth at an advanced maternal age.” The propaganda newspaper identified Qin as a local government official in addition to her day job as a lawyer.

“Three political advisors in Shanghai proposed to set up a public frozen egg bank in a pilot exploration scheme to help women in need, especially cancer patients who might lose fertility after receiving medical treatment,” the Times narrated. “[T] he political advisors suggested setting up a public egg bank and carrying out centralized management on frozen eggs to raise efficiency.”

The outlet quoted Qin as stating that the United States considers freezing women’s eggs a “standard medical service” and that China has much to gain from following that example. Among the hurdles the program would face is the fact that the Communist Party in Shanghai strictly regulates who has access to egg-freezing, limiting the list to “couples with a history of infertility and cancer patients who expect to preserve their fertility before undergoing surgery or chemotherapy.” Most preservation of eggs is not freezing in China, however, which means most expire after five years, the newspaper noted.

Chinese state media have been advocating for the Communist Party to implement programs that not just repeal limitations on having children, but actively incentivize couples to do so given the dire state of the country’s birth rate. The latest available data show that 14.65 million babies were born in China in 2019, a record-low in this century and a number last documented in China in 1961, at the height of Mao-era persecution and poverty. A scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Yi Fuxian, called that number “seriously overestimated” and claimed the true number of births that year was closer to 10 million.

Dutch Coronavirus Riots, Worst in 40 Years, Descend into Looting, Attacks on Police

The Dutch government denied it was planning to deploy the army to quell anti-corona-lockdown riots on Tuesday as the country experienced its third day of unrest in response to a curfew order.

Unrest has spread out of the major Dutch cities to dozens of smaller towns across the Netherlands in the past three days. Protests against a nationwide coronavirus curfew developed into full-blown riots, resulting in violent attacks against police and other emergency workers and looting of shops. Police arrested over 180 people on Monday night, following another 240 arrested on Sunday night.

EU Threatens to Restrict Exports of Vaccines, Blocking Shipments to UK

Brussels has ordered all drugs manufacturers producing vaccines against the Chinese coronavirus in the bloc to inform them before exporting to non-EU nations, giving the bloc powers to stop exports to countries including the UK.

The move came as a result of anger in Brussels when Pfizer announced that it would be providing 50 million fewer doses — a reduction of 60 per cent — to the political bloc due to manufacturing problems at its Belgian labs.

On Monday, Brussels, the capital of the European Union which hosts many of the bloc’s administrative power structures, told Pfizer and other drugs firms operating in the Union that it must supply “early notification” of exports of vaccines, according to The Times.

The bloc’s health commissioner, Stella Kyriakides, had complained that Pfizer’s notification that it cannot deliver on time was “not acceptable to the EU”.

“All companies producing vaccines against Covid-19 will have to provide early notification whenever they want to export vaccines to [non-EU] countries,” Ms Kyriakides added, threatening to “take any action required to protect its citizens and rights”.

Germany’s health minister, Jens Spahn, told broadcaster ZDF on Tuesday morning that the measures would enable Brussels to block exports which it deemed could threaten regional stocks, much like how the bloc stopped exports of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in March 2020 as it was unable to provide enough for its own member-states.

Mr Spahn claimed that this was “not about Europe first but about Europe’s fair share”. Germany was embroiled in a scandal earlier this month over accusations that it was taking a Germany First approach by circumnavigating the collective purchasing regime adopted by the bloc and securing its own additional supplies.

France also faced criticism at the beginning of January for managing to organise the vaccination of just 516 people out of a population of 67 million in the first week of their vaccine’s rollout.

The UK was the first Western nation to approve a vaccine — the Pfizer-BioNTech shot — for use, and later approved two other vaccinations. It has vaccinated 10 per cent of the population; the EU, just two per cent.

Britain’s national distribution of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, of which the government has ordered 100 million doses, is unaffected, as it is produced in the United Kingdom. The UK had, however, started a mass rollout of the Pfizer vaccination, which have been dubbed the “workhorses” of Britain’s inoculation programme, having ordered 40 million applications, 3.5 million expected to be delivered in the next three weeks.

The UK appears on track to inoculate the country’s most vulnerable groups by mid-February, which could facilitate plans for easing lockdown. But British ministers reportedly fear that the bloc could try to tie up shipments of the Pfizer shot in paperwork, slowing that progress. Around half a million doses could already be delayed due to delays at Pfizer’s Belgian facilities.

Biden Signs Executive Order to Begin Testing COVID-19 Vaccine Passports

Newly installed American President Joe Biden signed an executive order on Thursday imposing new travel restrictions and also begin testing the feasibility of COVID-19 vaccine passports.

In remarks delivered by President Biden on his administration’s COVID-19 response and other presidential actions, he said:

“In addition to wearing a mask, everyone flying to the United States from another country will need to test before they get on that plane, before they depart. And quarantine when they arrive in America.”

The executive order mandates masks in airports, and on most forms of public transportation, including commercial aircraft, trains, ferries, and intercity bus services.

The order states that international travelers shall be “required to produce proof of a recent negative COVID-19 test prior to entry,” and comply with recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), including “periods of self-quarantine or self-isolation after entry into the United States.”

The directive orders his administration to work with foreign governments, the World Health Organization, and other international “stakeholders” to impose consistent international restrictions in several aspects, including “quarantine, testing, COVID-19 vaccination, follow-up testing and symptom-monitoring, environmental decontamination standards … and contact tracing.”

The Executive Order on Promoting COVID-19 Safety in Domestic and International Travel directs his administration to evaluate the possibility of including COVID-19 vaccinations as requirements for international travel, that is, developing vaccine passports without which you won’t be able to travel.

International Certificates of Vaccination or Prophylaxis. Consistent with applicable law, the Secretary of State, the Secretary of HHS, and the Secretary of Homeland Security (including through the Administrator of the TSA), in coordination with any relevant international organizations, shall assess the feasibility of linking COVID-19 vaccination to International Certificates of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) and producing electronic versions of ICVPs.

Such vaccine passports and apps are being funded and developed by the same Pharma companies manufacturing the vaccines.

Mike Pence's former homeland security advisor and lead staffer on White House COVID task force reveals she was asked to 'spy' on Dr. Birx because she was 'not to be trusted'

A former aide for Mike Pence has claimed she was asked to spy on ex-coronavirus task force coordinator Dr Deborah Birx as the medical expert was thought 'not to be trusted'.

Olivia Troye, who served as Pence's homeland security advisor and lead staffer on the White House coronavirus task force, revealed in an interview with All In With Chris Hayes on Monday that Dr Birx was in a 'no-win situation' on the task force.

Troye claimed that she was called on to keep on eye on Birx as she had been brought in by Matt Pottinger, Trump's deputy national security adviser who resigned following the Capitol riot.

It is not known who asked her to monitor Birx.

'I'm the person that was brought into a room at some point when she first started,' said Troye.

'She was coming into a no-win situation and even more so than I think she even realized. And I was told that I was to watch her. That she was not to be trusted because she was a Matt Pottinger hire.'

Troye, 44, has been critical of the Trump White House since leaving in August, when she announced that she would be voting for Joe Biden despite being a lifelong Republican voter.

She has previously said that Trump showed a 'flat-out disregard for human life' in his response to the coronavirus pandemic.

On Monday, she also criticized the administration for asking her to spy on Birx and said she was happy the medical expert is now 'speaking candidly' about her experience.

'So here I am as a homeland adviser,' recalled Troye. 'And [the White House] is asking me to spy on this woman that I'm sharing an office with when the pandemic is about to be out of control.

More than 68 shakes have been recorded near Rotorua, New Zealand, since 18:47 UTC on January 24, 2021 (07:47 LT on January 25), with magnitudes up to 4.9 and depth of 5 km (3 miles), according to GeoNet.

More than 5 200 people reported feeling the tremors on the GeoNet website, with a resident describing one shake as the biggest. "[It was] the biggest I have felt in years. I am still shaking." Another resident also said, "The biggest one went so long I didn't think it would end,"

The first quake had a magnitude of 4.5 located 20 km (12 miles) east of Rotorua at a depth of 4 km (2.5 miles).

It was then followed by an M4.9 aftershock in the same area, at a depth of 5 km (3 miles), as well as several more tremblors.

Bay of Plenty Civil Defence stated in a post on social media that a lot of people reported swaying, but "at this stage, we are not aware of any damage."

"Some things are still being checked as a precaution, especially because they were such shallow quakes."

Biden wants to give $4 billion in aid to Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala to reduce migration, Mexico's president reveals

Mexico's president Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that Joe Biden told him the U.S. would send $4 billion to help development in Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala - nations whose hardships have spawned tides of migration through Mexico toward the United States.

López Obrador, who spoke Friday with Biden by phone, said the two discussed immigration and the need to address the root causes of why people migrate.

Mexico has stopped recent attempts by caravans of Central American migrants to cross Mexico.

Biden's call with López Obrador also came at a tense moment - days after the Mexican president accused the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration of fabricating drug trafficking charges against the country´s former defense secretary.

While Mexico continues to pledge to block mass movements of Central American migrants toward the U.S. border, there has been no shortage of potential flashpoints between the two countries.

Mexico demanded the return of former Defense Secretary Gen. Salvador Cienfuegos after he was arrested in Los Angeles in October, threatening to restrict U.S. agents in Mexico if he wasn't returned. U.S. prosecutors agreed to drop charges and return Cienfuegos to Mexico.

But Mexico passed a law restricting foreign agents and removing their immunity anyway, and went on to publish the U.S. case file against Cienfuegos, whom Mexican prosecutors quickly cleared of any charges.

López Obrador said in a statement Friday that the conversation with Biden was 'friendly and respectful.'

A man from Ohio who is accused of entering the U.S. Capitol and stealing a coat rack from the Senate during the January 6 siege of the building, claims he was 'inspired to do so by former President Donald Trump's lies about election fraud.'

Dustin Byron Thompson, 36, from Columbus was accompanied by his layer Sam Shamansky on Monday morning at the U.S. District Courthouse in the Ohio state capital.

'How else do you explain otherwise rational, law-abiding citizens traveling to D.C. and doing what they did?' Shamansky asked as he made the point to a federal judge in the hearing which saw his client released on own recognizance.

In what could signal a defense strategy for many of the people ensnared after the Capitol riots, Thompson's attorney essentially is laying the blame at Trump's feet, saying his client was merely following the instructions of the former president.

As of Monday, at least 95 individuals have been charged in connection with the riot, according to DOJ records with at least five using a similar defense.

The words may end up being used against Trump in his Senate impeachment trial as he faces the charge of inciting a violent insurrection.

The White House is demanding the unconditional release of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny after a crackdown on peaceful protests over the weekend – and President Joe Biden said Monday he is 'very concerned' about Russia's behavior.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki on Monday called for the 'immediate' release of Navalny, who returned to his home country and is being held for 30 days after being poisoned with a chemical nerve agent.

'These continued efforts to suppress Russia's rights to peacefully protest and assemble, their freedom of expression, the arrest of opposition figure Alexei Navalny and the crackdown on protests that followed are troubling indications of further restrictions on Russian civil society,' said Psaki, echoing a State Department statement issued Saturday.

'So I'll just reiterate our call from here on Russian authorities to release all those detained for exercising their universal rights and for the immediate and unconditional release of Alexei Navalny,' she added.

It came after a weekend which saw his wife Yulia Navalnaya arrested them released from custody in Moscow after being part of an anti-Putin rally on Saturday.

Alexei's wife was among nearly 3,500 people to have been detained by Russian police officers during protests in as many as 100 cities.

After being arrested by officers Yulia, 44, posted a selfie onto her Instagram page with the caption: 'Apologies for the poor quality. Very bad light in the police van.'

According to reports from Russian media outlets, Yulia has now been released from police custody in Moscow.

It comes after supporters of Putin critic Alexei Navalny continued to clash with police deep into the night as world leaders condemned officers' 'brutal tactics' which left crowds of activists bloodied and injured.

China’s Xi warns Davos World Economic Forum against ‘new Cold War’

Beijing - Chinese President Xi Jinping warned global leaders at an all-virtual Davos forum Monday against starting a “new Cold War”, and urged global unity in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.

Having largely curbed the spread of the pandemic within its borders, Xi wants to position China as a key player in a new multilateral world order as the US remains crippled by the pandemic. “To build small cliques or start a new Cold War, to reject, threaten or intimidate others… will only push the world into division,” said Xi in a likely veiled attack on US President Joe Biden’s plans to revitalise global alliances to counter China’s growing influence.

In a swipe at moves targeting China launched by the previous US administration under President Donald Trump, Xi said confrontation “will always end up harming every nation’s interests and sacrificing people’s welfare”. The Chinese leader also reaffirmed Beijing’s ambitious climate pledges to slash carbon emissions by 65 per cent by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 – both significant commitments as China emits a quarter of the world’s greenhouse gases.

“Meeting these targets will require tremendous hard work from China. But we believe that when the interests of the entire humanity are at stake, China must step forward, take action and get the job done,” he said. IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kohavi says he has directed the military to prepare operational plans for the possibility that it will need to strike Iran to block its nuclear program.

“Iran can decide that it wants to advance to a bomb, either covertly or in a provocative way. In light of this basic analysis, I have ordered the IDF to prepare a number of operational plans, in addition to the existing ones. We are studying these plans and we will develop them over the next year,” Kohavi says.

In a rare public comment on American foreign policy, the army chief warns that US President Joe Biden should not rejoin the 2015 nuclear agreement, as he has indicated he plans to do provided Tehran halts its violations of the deal.

“With the changing of the administration in the United States, the Iranians have said they want to return to the previous agreement. I want to state my position, the position that I give to all my colleagues when I meet them around the world: Returning to the 2015 nuclear agreement or even to an agreement that is similar but with a few improvements is a bad thing and it is not the right thing to do,” Kohavi says.
