Suspicion of Chinese-Born Researchers Threatens US Innovation

The arrest of MIT engineering professor Gang Chen on Jan. 14 has drawn attention to the role of China in U.S. science and technology system. It’s not the first time suspicions have fallen on a Chinese-born scientist – Chen is a naturalized U.S. citizen – for work they conduct openly in the United States.

The charges against Gang Chen – wire fraud, failing to report a foreign bank account and a false statement on a tax return – stem from failing to disclose Chinese funding for his research. MIT called the allegations “distressing,” and the school’s president and 100 faculty members are defending a Chinese university’s investment in MIT research. No evidence of spying has been made public, but a Department of Justice criminal complaint expressed suspicions that Chen’s loyalty may not be aligned with American interests.

These kinds of investigations risk damaging one of the U.S.‘s most important assets: open inquiry.

The U.S. government’s scrutiny of Chinese Americans and Chinese scholars runs up against the value of open scientific exchange. My research on international collaboration in science has shown that open nations have strong science. Nations that accept visitors and send researchers abroad, those that engage richly in cross-border collaborations and fund international projects produce better science and excel in innovation. Closing doors inhibits the very trait that makes the U.S. innovation system the envy of the world.

For six decades, the United States has been the mecca for smart people interested in conducting research. But this changed under the Trump administration: Government agencies looked with extra scrutiny at scholars from China for fear they planned to steal intellectual property. In a speech to U.S. academics, an FBI official has stated, “…the greatest long-term threat to our nation’s information and ideas and to our economic vitality and leadership is the threat from the Chinese government.”

Scrutinizing Chinese researchers as if their actions automatically deserve suspicion threatens to poison the relationship between the U.S. and China, the rising world power in science and technology. I contend that cutting off this relationship makes the American innovation system more vulnerable, not safer. U.S. strength is in rapid innovation in an open environment; China’s choice for a more closed society may work against their innovation goals, but we should not turn it against our own.

Twitter will allow some users to ‘fact-check’ tweets by others

While Twitter will be starting with 1,000 community users for now, the hope is to extend the new program to 100,000 users.

Continuing the trend of Big Tech censorship, Twitter announced on Monday that it would begin allowing certain users of its social media platform to “fact-check” tweets, with the ability to add notes if they discern the content to be “misleading.”

To this end, Twitter has created Birdwatch, a “community-based approach to misinformation.” The users who are selected to be part of the community watch will be asked “to identify information in Tweets they believe is misleading and write notes that provide informative context.”

Twitter envisages that the new initiative will enable them “to respond quickly when misleading information spreads.”

The program is currently in the pilot stage of development. Americans using Twitter who have not violated the platform’s “Rules and Policies” are eligible to join the program. While Twitter will be starting with 1,000 community users for now, the hope is to extend the program to 100,000 users.

In an attempt to quell fears that the platform is building an army of politically motivated censors, the company said it is focused on “ensuring [Birdwatch] isn’t dominated by a simple majority or biased based on its distribution of contributors.”

Keith Coleman, vice president of product at Twitter wrote that, currently, “[we] apply labels and add context to tweets, but we don’t want to limit efforts to circumstances where something breaks our rules or receives widespread public attention.”

“We also want to broaden the range of voices that are part of tackling this problem, and we believe a community-driven approach can help,” Coleman said.

According to Twitter’s announcement, “people valued notes being in the community’s voice (rather than that of Twitter or a central authority) and appreciated that notes provided useful context to help them better understand and evaluate a Tweet (rather than focusing on labeling content as ‘true’ or ‘false’).”

CORTES: Trump Can Turn the Impeachment on the Insiders and Put Congress on ‘Trial’.

As former President Trump faces the second sham impeachment effort of Speaker Nancy Pelosi in just over a year, opportunity arises, both for him and for the America First movement. But Pelosi’s snap-impeachment also includes the scurrilous accusation that President Trump “repeatedly issued false statements asserting that the Presidential election results were the product of widespread fraud and should not be accepted by the American people or certified by State or Federal officials.”

Clearly, this allegation by the impeachment resolution opens the trial proceedings to a full adjudication of whether Trump’s post-election assertions were, in fact, “false statements.”

In a perverse sense, Pelosi and her minions unwittingly did the country a service.

At last, our deeply divided nation is afforded a trial setting to fully weigh the countervailing arguments about the validity of the 2020 presidential vote in the highly contested states. After all, recent polling reveals severe skepticism about the official results among tens of millions of voters.

A November 23rd CNBC survey found that a scant 3 percent of Trump voters believe Biden won legitimately.

Even after constant efforts of corporate media to affix blame for rioting to Trump, varied polling shows his supporters remain solidly supportive of the 45th President. For example, in battleground states, McLaughlin & Associates polling found that fully 76 percent of Republican voters reported that they are less likely to support any member of Congress who supports this second impeachment.

The proper way to bridge this wide chasm regarding the November 3rd vote involves a serious presentation of evidence before massive national broadcast audience.

Media charlatans constantly claim that Trump lost dozens of court cases contesting results. In reality, most of these cited lawsuits were brought by non-campaign plaintiffs, and almost all went unheard on procedural grounds.

The Occupation Of Washington Is Pure Panic Porn — And You Are The Target

Just this week, we learned that thousands of Guardsmen could remain in Washington DC 'indefinitely.' Certainly through President Donald Trump's impeachment trial.

WASHINGTON, DC — The National Guard have been in D.C. for three weeks now.

Fences, military trucks, and armored vehicles crisscross our roads and neighborhoods. Major traffic arteries through the city have been closed. Concertina razor wire surrounds our noble government buildings.

Originally called to secure the Capitol building from attackers, the Guard never left. By Inauguration Day, some newspaper reports put the number of uniformed troops deployed to the city at more than 25,000. Bridges were shut down, highway exits blocked, gates raised.

When asked, police and Guardsmen on the ground privately shared the belief they were here to stay. Soon, reports began to leak that indeed they would — through President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial. Just this week, we learned that thousands of Guardsmen could remain “indefinitely.”

If this seems theatrical and excessive, it’s because it is. Worse yet, it’s about politics, not security, with the same politicians who claimed Antifa violence against their voters was a “myth” now insisting they need a full division of troops to defend them from a rebel army that doesn’t exist.

For months last year the American people endured hundreds of race riots, anarchist crime sprees, and literal occupations. As this lawlessness raged, calls to deploy federal forces were treated as if they were calls for fascism. When Sen. Tom Cotton published a New York Times op-ed in June calling to send in the U.S. Army — as Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson and H.W. Bush had done to quell civil disorder before — readers and Times staffers rebelled, leading to the resignations of the editorial page editor and a senior editor with him.

In its scramble to apologize, the paper attached a 325-word mea culpa to the top of the op-ed. The senator’s call to restore order with U.S. forces “falls short of the thoughtful approach that advances useful debate,” the new editors charged. The cited constitutional duty to defend states, they claimed, should have been put into quotation marks. Cotton’s assertion that Antifa was a leader in the nationwide riots, they wrote in perhaps the most laughable portion, has “not been substantiated.”

Two doctors dead in apparent murder-suicide following hostage situation at Texas children's medical center

Two people are dead after an armed doctor reportedly killed a female pediatrician during a six-hour standoff at an Austin, Texas, children's medical clinic on Tuesday night.

A SWAT team discovered the bodies late Tuesday after negotiators reportedly spent at least six hours attempting to speak to the people inside the clinic.

What are the details?

A male doctor and a female doctor are both dead after the male doctor — identified by KVUE-TV as Dr. Bharat Narumanchi — took the female pediatrician — identified by KVUE as Dr. Katherine Lindley Dodson — and a group of other people hostage at a Texas children's clinic.

Police say that the male doctor took the female doctor hostage before fatally shooting her and then himself.

According to the station, the Austin Police Department said that Narumanchi visited the office a week before and applied for a volunteer position at the clinic.

Narumanchi, a pediatrician who was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer, was reportedly denied the position. KHOU-TV reported that Narumanchi had just "weeks to live."

KHOU reported that Narumanchi was a pediatrician with office locations in California. He completed his coursework with St. George's University School of Medicine in True Blue, Grenada, and was said to have completed his residency at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Police are now investigating why a reportedly armed Narumanchi returned to the clinic, as the two reportedly did not appear to have any relationship outside the previous week's visit.

Officers responded to the clinic around 4:30 p.m. local time after receiving reports of a "disturbance at a building," KVUE reported. The situation escalated and lasted until approximately 11:00 p.m. local time.

Witnesses said that everyone inside the office had been taken hostage, but at least three people were immediately let go by the suspect.

It is unclear at the time of this reporting how many hostages — who reported seeing Narumanchi armed with a pistol and what appeared to be a shotgun — were involved in the situation.

KVUE reported that negotiators were heard pleading with Narumanchi, saying, "I know you have helped so many children. We want that to be your legacy. Please make that possible. … We know you have a lot going on in your life. We know you have been helping children your whole life."

According to KXAN-TV, Dodson, 43, was married with three children. She went to medical school at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans and completed her residency at Vanderbilt University Children's Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee.

Man Claiming to Be CNA in Nursing Home: Seniors, “Dying Like Flies” After Getting Pfizer COVID Vaccine

I’m not able to determine the original source of this video, or if James Devalon (unsure of spelling) is a licensed medical professional in any U.S. state.

However, if the danger to elderly people from the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine is actually as severe as he states, the message should get out.

James (he gives his last name in the video) is a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant), and he recorded this video as a whistleblower because he could not keep silent any longer.

James reports that in 2020 very few residents in the nursing home where he works got sick with COVID, and none of them died during the entire year of 2020.

However, shortly after administering the Pfizer experimental mRNA injections, 14 died within two weeks, and he reports that many others are near death.

The video is long (47 minutes), and it is clear that James is suffering from emotional stress, and he admits that he has nothing to gain from going public, and that he will probably lose his job for doing so.

But he makes it very clear that these were patients he knew and cared for (he is also a “lay pastor”), and that after being injected with the mRNA shot, residents who used to walk on their own can no longer walk. Residents who used to carry on an intelligent conversation with him could no longer talk.

And now they are dying. “They’re dropping like flies.”

His superiors are explaining the deaths as being caused by a COVID19 “super-spreader.”

However, the residents who refused to take the injections, are not sick, according to James.

Wisconsin Senate Votes to Overturn Democrat Governor’s Statewide Mask Mandate

The GOP-led Wisconsin senate on Tuesday voted 18-13 to repeal Democrat Governor Tony Evers’ statewide mask mandate.

Governor Evers issued an emergency 60-day order in August of 2020 and continued to extend his unlawful mandates – until now.

The Republican state lawmakers are working to put an end to Evers’ abuse.

The resolution will head to the GOP-led state assembly on Thursday.

If the joint resolution passes the assembly, it does not need Governor Evers’ approval.

“Governor Evers has abused his limited authority for far too long by repeatedly issuing unlawful orders beyond his 60-day emergency powers,” Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu, R-Oostburg said in a statement. “The Senate voted to end the executive overreach and restore our constituents’ voice in the legislative process.”

A spokeswoman for Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, R-Rochester, said the resolution will come before the Assembly on Thursday, but did not indicate how much support the measure has in the chamber. Republican leaders in the Assembly have not sponsored the resolution.

Measures added back to the bill would prohibit employers from mandating vaccines for employees and allow local public health officials the ability to limit gatherings at churches and other places of worship. Another amendment would grant the state’s GOP-led budget committee authority over how the state spends future federal funds dedicated to the pandemic — a measure Evers has opposed.

Other items in the package that already have passed the Senate would limit COVID-19 liability claims against employers, schools, public health care providers and local governments. It also would extend the state’s one-week waiting period waiver for unemployment benefits and allow for Medicaid coverage for COVID-19 testing and vaccines.

If the Assembly votes Thursday to eliminate the state mask rule, local orders, like those in Madison and Milwaukee, would remain in effect. Dane County’s local order requires everyone age five and older to wear a mask when indoors, with some exceptions.

Biden’s Energy Nominee Divvied Millions In Taxpayer Funds To Alternative Energy Startups That Went Bankrupt

President Joe Biden’s nominee to head the Department of Energy, Jennifer Granholm, divvied out millions in taxpayer funds during her two terms as Michigan governor to alternative energy companies that eventually went bankrupt.

In one instance, Granholm’s administration provided a $9.1 million refundable tax credit to a renewable energy company registered to the address of a single-wide trailer and run by a convicted embezzler named Richard Short. Short was found to be in violation of his parole and sent back to prison after appearing on stage with Granholm in 2010 to accept assistance from the Michigan Economic Growth Authority, according to Michigan Capitol Confidential.

Granholm also granted $10 million to an electric car battery manufacturer, A123 Systems, in 2009 and lauded the company in a press conference, saying it would help “make Michigan the alternative energy capital of North America and the advanced battery capital of the world.”

A123 Systems, which also received a $249.12 million federal grant by the Obama administration, filed for bankruptcy in 2012. The company is still in operation today as a subsidiary of a Chinese firm, Wanxiang America.

Another manufacturer of electric vehicle components that received Michigan taxpayer-funded assistance under Granholm’s watch, Azure Dynamics, filed for bankruptcy in 2012 and laid off 12o employees.

Granholm served as governor of Michigan from 2003 to 2011.

Only 2.3 percent of the 434 projects funded by the Michigan Economic Growth Authority under Granholm’s watch were successful in meeting their projected job creation goals, according to the American Energy Alliance.

Granholm would take a leading role in bringing Biden’s goal of building 550,000 electric vehicle charging stations and replacing the federal government’s fleet of vehicles with electric vehicles if she gets confirmed by the senate. The Senate Committee on Energy & Natural Resources is holding hearing on Granholm’s nomination Wednesday.

Granholm’s critics say her record as Michigan’s governor disqualifies her from heading the Department of Energy.

Earlier in the day, a Bloomberg defense reporter said that the Biden administration would temporarily pause some US foreign arms sales, particularly putting under review the sales of weapons to Saudi Arabia and of Lockheed Martin F-35 jets to the UAE.

The US State Department spokesperson confirmed on Wednesday that the Biden cabinet is pausing some US foreign arms sales for "routine" review.

The confirmation process for core positions in the Biden administration is in full swing. Linda Thomas-Greenfield is expected to be confirmed as the new US envoy to the United Nations on Wednesday.

To date, the US Senate has confirmed the nominations of Avril Haines as Director of National Intelligence, Janet Yellen as Treasury Secretary, Lloyd Austin as Defence Secretary, and Antony Blinken as Secretary of State.

International Warmongers Beat the War Drums for War Against Russia

“Love greetings to Moscow: Biden threatens to end Putin’s ‘tyranny'”. Biden made this poisoned “promise” to the Russian president long before his stolen election as the new US president (1). About the upcoming private meeting of selected warmongers in Munich, he says: “Like no other global forum, Munich connects European leaders and thinkers with their peers from across the world (2).” However, the only certain thing about this so-called security conference – postponed because of the Corona plague – is that the world’s worst warmongers are again beating the war drums. This year, possibly for a new war against Russia. Peoples hear the signals!

Almost 80 years ago – in the summer of 1941 – fascist Germany invaded the Soviet Union – not without the support of Western states – and left behind a record of horror: an estimated 13 million dead soldiers, 14 million dead civilians and 3 million dead prisoners of war (3). And only three generations later, the war drums are being beaten for a new war against Russia. Therefore, continue to sign the Public Declaration of 8/9 May 2018 in the “Neue Rheinische Zeitung (NRhZ)” (4): “We Europeans say NO to war against Russia!”

For the younger generation, who do not know what war means, the Kyrgyz writer Chingiz Aitmatov describes in the story “Gold Trail of Sheaves” how the “Great Patriotic War” broke out over the Soviet Union and instantly changed the lives of young and old (5). Often only very personal accounts reach people’s hearts.

In a conversation with Mother Earth in Aitmatov’s narrative, Mother Tolgonai, who lost her husband and a son in that war, says:

“Consider, dear Earth, it is precisely your best workers, your most skilled masters, that war murders. I do not agree with it, my whole life I do not agree with it! People can and must put a stop to war (6).”

At the beginning of the story, Tolgonai, daughter of a Kyrgyz day labourer, describes how she met Suwankul, her future husband, while harvesting at the age of 17:

“The sun rose flaming, the snow-covered mountain peaks shone with a golden glow, the wind flowed towards us from the steppe like a deep blue river. These early summer mornings were the dawn of our love. The whole world changed like a fairy tale when we walked together. And the field, grey, trampled and churned, became the most beautiful field on earth… (p. 435).”

Moved by happiness, she asked her beloved in a whisper, “Suwan, what do you think, we will be happy, won’t we?” And he replied:

“When land and water are equally distributed among all, when we too have our own field, when we too plough, sow and thresh our own grain – then that will be our happiness. Man needs no greater happiness, Tolgonai. The happiness of the cultivator lies in sowing and reaping (p. 436).”

With their hands they both created their lives. They worked and did not put down the ktmen (hoe) in summer or winter: much sweat they shed, much toil they expended. They built themselves a house and got themselves a few head of cattle. They began to live like people. But the greatest thing was that three sons were born to them. Time passed and almost imperceptibly the sons grew up. Each one chose his own path.

Joe Biden to Ban New Fracking Leases on Federal Lands Despite Promise Not To

President Joe Biden will announce a ban on new oil and gas leases on federal lands and waters on Wednesday, according to several reports.

Biden’s decision bars any new fracking on federal lands despite his campaign promise not to ban the practice.

“I am not banning fracking. Let me say that again: I am not banning fracking,” Biden said in August 2020 during the presidential campaign. “No matter how many times Donald Trump lies about me.”

Despite multiple promises to end fracking and fossil fuels during the Democrat primary or end “new fracking,” Biden clarified while campaigning in Pennsylvania ahead of the presidential election that he would only ban new fracking on federal lands.

“No, I would not shut down this industry. I know our Republican friends are trying to say I said that,” Biden said about fracking in an interview with Pittsburg’s KDKA News.

“I said I would not do any new leases on federal lands,” Biden continued. “Ninety percent of the leases are not on federal land, to begin with. I would make sure … the water is not being contaminated. But I would not shut it down, no.”

The issue of a fracking ban was prominently featured in the final presidential debate when Biden falsely stated that he never said he would ban fracking.

We can do that and we can do that by investing money into– It’s a transition to that.

Welker: I have one more question–

Trump: Excuse me. He was against fracking. He said it. I will show that to you tomorrow. ‘I am against fracking’, until he got the nomination, went to Pennsylvania then he said– You know what, Pennsylvania? He’ll be against it very soon because his party is totally against it.

Biden: Fracking on federal land, I said. No fracking or oil on federal land.

President Trump followed through on his promise, publishing a campaign video highlighting Biden’s discussion of eliminating fracking and fossil fuels.

Dem Rep. Clark: More Money Needed in Next COVID Bill to Help Women with ‘Pay Equity’

Wednesday on CNN’s “New Day,” Rep. Katherine Clark (D-MA) voiced her support for more money in the next COVID-19 relief bill to help women with “pay equity” and “paid family leave.”

Host Alisyn Camerota noted to Clark that “women have been hit so hard by COVID” by getting sick and losing their jobs as a result of the pandemic.

On top of the additional money for women, Clark also pushed for raising the minimum wage to address problems with the “pandemic economy.”

“Child care is absolutely critical infrastructure if we want to reopen an economy,” Clark emphasized. “And we have to look at it also — child care is a great example of what you were just talking about — the devastating effect for women in the pandemic economy. So, we look at who helps us raise our children, who provides the early education. It is women and predominantly women of color. And we have this terrible paradox in this country where child care is very expensive for parents and pays very low wages and benefits for providers. All of the pieces that we need to rebuild an economy are really seen in the child care example because we need to support women with pay equity, with paid family leave, making sure that we’re raising the minimum wage and that people are paid a living wage that when they’re working full-time, they can support their family. And schools have to become the safest place in our communities.”

She concluded, “We are not going to have a recovery, even with a fair and equitable vaccine distribution, if we don’t address these issues. We always have known they existed, but now they’re in stark relief.”

Teachers’ Unions ‘Keep Moving Goalposts’ on Criteria for Reopening Schools

In a piece published at education site The 74 on the day of Biden’s inauguration, Mike Antonucci observed while teachers’ unions were continuing the narrative that “no one wants to reopen schools more than educators,” they “keep moving the goalposts.”

“[F]or something that they say they want more than anyone, unions seem very committed to stalling for as long as possible,” he wrote. “’Not until it’s safe’ makes a good hashtag, but what do the unions consider to be safe? That’s where things get complicated and vague.”

Standard safety precautions include masks, social distancing, air purifiers, and regular handwashing.

But, in places like Chicago, where union members have voted to defy an order to show up in their classrooms, the school district has already invested $100 million in virus-related safety precautions, including PPE, air purifiers, and additional custodial staff.

Chicago Catholic schools have been open for in school instruction since August with almost no issues. Those teachers get paid a fraction of what CPS teachers are paid. It is pretty clear who values the students more.

In Fairfax County, Virginia, the president of the teachers’ union said all students should receive the COVID-19 vaccine before full-time in-person learning resumes.

“The timeline and return to in-person instruction must reflect that we wait for the second dose to be effective,” Kimberly Adams said, reported the Washington Free Beacon. “Concerns also remain that students will not be vaccinated before they return to school. This will require that we maintain the hybrid model and continue social distancing, masking, and all other mitigation strategies.”

Biden’s DHS: Military Occupation Around Government Buildings Must Continue, Americans Should Snitch On Their Neighbors

"We ask the public to report suspicious activity and threats of violence, including online activity, to local law enforcement, FBI Field Offices, or their local Fusion Center."

The Department of Homeland Security issued a National Terrorism Advisory System (NTAS) Bulletin warning on January 27 that called for a continuation of military occupation around government buildings and and urged Americans to report “suspicious” online activity to law enforcement.

This comes as the Army confirmed reports that thousands of troops will remain in Washington until mid-March.

“DHS encourages state, local, tribal, and territorial homeland security partners to continue prioritizing physical security measures, particularly around government facilities, to protect people and critical infrastructure.”

The NTAS Bulletin warning alleges a “heightened threat environment” across the nation, which the DHS believes “will persist” for weeks following the mostly crowdless inauguration of Joe Biden, who was sworn in surrounded by 25 thousand National Guard troops.

“Information suggests that some ideologically-motivated violent extremists with objections to the exercise of governmental authority and the presidential transition, as well as other perceived grievances fueled by false narratives, could continue to mobilize to incite or commit violence.”

DHS is asking Americans to “report suspicious activity and threats of violence, including online activity,” to the government.

Furthermore, Americans can be “prepared” for this threat by avoiding large crowds and wearing masks, according to DHS.
