On Wednesday, American stock markets were rocked by a group of small retail investors cooperating via Reddit to push GameStop company stocks to 1,700% above its previous value in just a few weeks, forcing institutional hedge fund investors to retreat due to huge financial losses.

It did not take long for some American analysts to raise theories that it might be "foreign powers" that prompted a GameStop swift short squeeze that quaked the US investment sector on Wednesday.

American journalist Herb Greenberg, speaking on the CNBC Halftime Report, alleged that "foreign interference" could be behind what was been dubbed by some as a "French Revolution in finance", as a large group of small time Reddit-coordinated retail investors caused arrogant hedge funds to lose billions of dollars.

"I don't even know if there are foreign powers at work here behind the scenes trying to make chaff off our market", Greenberg declared in a heated debate with CNBC's Jim Cramer.

It's no secret that Walmart is gearing up for a lengthy fight against rival Amazon.

Walmart's competitive advantages are their stores - and to complete last-mile deliveries, they must create local fulfillment centers (LFC) with extensive automation to keep up with a surge in online orders.

Walmart's Tom Ward, SVP of Customer Product, published a blog post on the company's website outlining how LFCs, a modular warehouse added to an existing store, will be automated and stocked with additional items that are popular with customers.

Ward explains how LFCs work:

"Instead of an associate walking the store to fulfill an order from our shelves, automated bots retrieve the items from within the fulfillment center. The items are then brought to a picking workstation, where the order can be assembled with speed.

We've always said personal shoppers are the secret to our pickup and delivery success, and that remains true. So, while the system retrieves the order for assembly, a personal shopper handpicks fresh items like produce, meat and seafood, and large general merchandise from the sales floor.

Once the order is collected, the system stores it until it's ready for pickup. This whole process can take just a few minutes from the time the order is placed to the time it's ready for a customer or delivery driver to collect," he wrote.

LFCs can store thousands of popular items, from consumables to electronics to fresh and frozen items.

European Aviation Agency Clears Boeing 737 Max to Fly Again

BERLIN—A modified version of the Boeing 737 Max, incorporating multiple safety upgrades, has been approved to resume flights in Europe, following nearly two years of reviews after the aircraft was involved in two deadly crashes that saw the planes grounded worldwide, the European Aviation Safety Agency said Wednesday.

Changes mandated by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, or EASA, include a package of software upgrades, a reworking of the electrical system, maintenance checks, operations manual updates and new crew training.

“We have reached a significant milestone on a long road,” said EASA executive director Patrick Ky.

“Following extensive analysis by EASA, we have determined that the 737 MAX can safely return to service. This assessment was carried out in full independence of Boeing or the Federal Aviation Administration and without any economic or political pressure—we asked difficult questions until we got answers and pushed for solutions which satisfied our exacting safety requirements. We carried out our own flight tests and simulator sessions and did not rely on others to do this for us.”

The planes were grounded in March 2019 following the crashes of a Lion Air flight near Jakarta on Oct. 29, 2018, and an Ethiopian Airlines flight on March 10, 2019, killing a total of 346 people. Investigators determined that the cause of the crashes was a faulty computer system that pushed the plane’s nose downward in flight and couldn’t be overridden by pilots.

Changes mandated by EASA, based in Cologne, Germany, include a recertification of the plane’s flight-control system, called the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System, or MCAS, which was not a part of previous 737 models.

“While the investigations assessed that the behavior of the MCAS and related alerting systems were the clear main cause of the two crashes, EASA rapidly realized that a far wider review of the 737 MAX was needed,” the agency said.

EASA extended its analysis to the entire flight control system, with a particular focus on human factors—“the actual experience for a pilot of flying the plane.”

To that end, all 737 Max pilots will now need to undergo one-off special training, including on a simulator, to ensure they are fully familiar with the redesigned plane and able to handle specific scenarios that might arise during flight.

‘Truly disturbing’: Man charged after fatal baseball bat beating of mother, stepfather; victims identified

LOS ANGELES — A 44-year-old man has been charged with fatally beating his mother and stepfather with a baseball bat at their Hacienda Heights home earlier this month.

“The facts in this case are truly disturbing and we will ensure that there is accountability for these senseless killings,” Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said. “We ask that if anyone has information that can be helpful to the investigation and prosecution of this case, please contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.”

Nelson Garibay, 44, was charged with two counts of murder and one count of willful, deliberate and premeditated attempted murder.

On January 11, Garibay is accused of beating to death his mother, Irma Garibay, 65, and stepfather, Mario Flores-Romero, 73, after yelling was heard in the backyard, where Flores-Romero’s body was found. The mother’s body was discovered in the garage.

Garibay also is accused of beating his 37-year-old brother with a baseball bat. He survived his injuries.

It was unclear what led up to the fatal beatings and a motive is not clear. Garibay was arrested after a ten-day manhunt.

“Our father Mario dedicated his life to working hard and raising his children. He was now retired and looking forward to enjoying his days with his grandchildren,” wrote Martha Flores-Viera on a GoFundMe page. “He loved baseball and singing at our family gatherings.

“Irma, was a loving grandmother who always had a smile on her face and always helping others,” Flores-Viera added. “She was very involved in collecting toys and clothing for children and women in need.”

If convicted as charged, Garibay faces a maximum sentence of 57 years to life in state prison.

The case is being investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Impeachment alternative floated to screw over Trump

With Donald Trump's second impeachment trial increasingly looking dead on arrival, some Senators are reportedly pushing an alternative plan to screw him over.

US Senators are reportedly discussing a long-shot bipartisan effort to censure former President Trump over the Capitol attack earlier this month.

The idea has been put forward as it becomes increasingly clear that Trump’s impeachment trial will hand him a second acquittal, reports The Hill.

In the clearest sign yet the former President will not be convicted when his trial begins on February 8, the Senate voted 55-45 to reject a motion from Kentucky Senator Rand Paul stating that the process was unconstitutional, meaning the Democrats will struggle to reach the 67 votes they would need to convict the former President.

A bi-partisan censure motion, however, would only require 60 votes to pass the Senate.

It comes after some in the deaf community raised concerns that the White House’s new sign language interpreter did work for a conservative organisation, and was pictured wearing a MAGA hat and Trump-Pence gear.
