Dinesh is way the fuck off target. The retail purchasers caught the institutions making a major mistake and were able to marshal the resources to capitalize on it. While the argument that Gamestop doesn't have that much inherent (liquidation + projected earnings) value is probably true, its shares DO have a HIDDEN value in that the shorted shares that must be purchased to replace the borrowed shares DO NOT EXIST. That ... and the contractual obligation to purchase them anyway create a LOT of value. The funds need to buy stocks that the current owners do not need to sell. Every once in a while, supply and demand bites ya.
The deadline to purchase + the lack of willing sellers is where almost all the value comes from.
Tomorrow, the first guy and the last guy to sell are going to clean up.
