No, that guy is an idiot. Even if it were true that this could set off a chain reaction and crash the market, they're are not going to do that over a few borrowed shares of a failing company. All they have to do is forgive the debt and let the hedge fund walk away.
Remember that it's not us who they borrowed those shares from; it was a market maker somewhere.
