US-Russia Relations Under Biden Administration Will be 'Difficult', National Security Adviser Says

The statement comes as the US and Russia have agreed to extend the only remaining agreement on nuclear arms control for five years just days before it was set to expire.

The relations between Russia and the United States will be "difficult" under the Biden administration as the two nations need to have serious sustained talks around a set of nuclear challenges and threats that fall outside the New START agreement, national security adviser Jake Sullivan said on Friday.

"On Russia, you know, President Biden takes a clear eyed hard edit practical approach to this relationship. It is going to be challenging and difficult because Russia poses threats across multiple dimensions and part of our inheritance", Sullivan said.

The official emphasised that the new administration wishes to hold talks on strategic stability with Moscow, but will continue to object against "aggressive behaviour".

"We also very much need to deal with the fundamental question of strategic stability between two significant nuclear powers," Sullivan said at a virtual panel. "We will have to be able to impose costs and consequences for Russia’s aggressive behavior and threats to the United States and our allies and at the same time be able to have credible serious clear-eyed negations with them on hard strategic stability issues."

New START renewal

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed earlier on Friday the document extending the New START agreement for five years.

The deal, signed by then-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and his US counterpart at the time, Barack Obama in 2011, obliged each side gradually to slash its nuclear arsenal. In particular, the deal is premised on the proposition that each side ultimately reduce its nuclear arsenal to total 700 missiles, 1,550 warheads and 800 launchers.

It was set to expire in February 2021 and was in danger of not being renewed as the previous administration rejected the deal and wanted a new one. The Trump administration emphasised the need to include China in the arms control negotiations so as a new trilateral nuclear deal can be reached. China has repeatedly rejected the idea.

However, the Biden administration agreed to prolong it without preconditions and negotiated its extension earlier this week.

The establishment fears that Trump could make a comeback, win the Republican primaries in 2024, become the nominee, and return in triumph as president. They are determined to abort that possibility. Many openly admit it.

As soon as the Senate received the lone article of impeachment accusing President Donald Trump of “incitement of insurrection” in the Jan. 6 mob assault on the Capitol, Rand Paul rose to object.

The Senate, he said, has no right to try a private citizen, which Trump now is. Thus, what we are about to do is flatly unconstitutional.

Forty-five of 50 Republican members agreed with Paul’s motion.

“This vote indicates it’s over. The trial is all over,” said Paul. “If you voted that (the Senate trial is) … unconstitutional, how in the world would you ever vote to convict somebody for this?”

Consistency says you would not.

Susan Collins of Maine, one of five Republicans who voted against Paul’s motion, agreed that the vote portends the final vote on conviction.

“Do the math,” Collins said. “It’s extraordinarily unlikely the president will be convicted.”

Rand Paul may have just derailed the second impeachment of Donald Trump.

Chief Justice John Roberts, the constitutional officer designated to preside over Senate impeachment trials, has said he will not preside over this latest trial of the ex-president. With Roberts seeing no constitutional duty, and declining the honor, his replacement as the presiding officer will be Patrick Leahy of Vermont, the longest-serving Democrat and the president pro tempore of the Senate.

Putin Warns World About Risks Of “Fight Of All Against All” In “Grim Dystopia” Amid Growing Crises

Speaking at the World Economic Forum’s virtual Davos Agenda conference on January 27, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the current era shows parallels to the 1920s and 1930s before the “catastrophic World War II.”

Putin warned that the situation could result in “grim dystopia” if there’s no international effort to ease existing global tensions and imbalances.

“Nowadays, such a heated conflict is not possible, I hope,” Putin noted. “Because it will mean the end of our civilization.”

“But I’d like the reiterate that the situation might develop unpredictably and uncontrollably if we sit on our hands doing nothing to avoid it. There’s a possibility that we might experience an actual collapse in global development that might result in a fight of all against all.”

This situation, he warned, would result in a “grim dystopia.”

“The coronavirus pandemic has become a major challenge to mankind, and it has accelerated structural changes, the preconditions for which were already in place,” he added. “We have every reason to believe that the tensions might be aggravated even further.”

“International institutions are weakening, regional conflicts are multiplying, the global security system is degrading,” Putin said. “We need [to] ensure development following a different path—one that is positive, balanced, and constructive.”

According to Putin, “the use of trade barriers, illegitimate sanctions, restrictions in the financial, technological and information spheres—such a game without rules is dramatically increasing the risks of the unilateral use of military force, which is very dangerous.”

The Russian leadership demonstrates that it is well aware of the current global trends and is working to prevent the most negative scenario. The problem of the current international situation is that far from everybody ready to work in the same direction.

China Rejects British Overseas Passports Ahead Of UK's New Program To Welcome Millions Of Hong Kongers

Any Britons who have vacation (or business) plans in China in the immediate future might have a new problem on their hands.

Beijing announced Friday that it would no longer recognize British National Overseas (BNO) passports as travel documents in China from Jan. 31. The statement from the Chinese came as Britain prepares to offer a new visa program to millions of Hong Kongers, according to AP News.

"From Jan. 31, China will no longer recognize the so-called BNO passport as a travel document and ID document, and reserves the right to take further actions," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told reporters.

Lijian reiterated China's opposition to Britain's interference in Beijing's political affairs. He said the UK must come to terms that Hong Kong belongs to China.

"The policy of residence and naturalization in the UK has been repeatedly expanded. Britain's attempt to turn a large number of Hong Kong people into second-class British citizens has completely changed the BNO nature of the original Sino-British understanding," he said.

Lijian stressed that Britain's move violates their agreement with China making the current BNO invalid.

Last year, Beijing's passage of the national security law prompted the UK government to offer refuge for eligible Hong Kongers via BNO passports. But now the new BNO program is opening up to 5.4 million Hong Kongers.

Under the BNO policy, Hong Kongers can live and work in the UK for five years with an eventual citizenship path.

"I am immensely proud that we have brought in this new route for Hong Kong BNOs to live, work and make their home in our country," British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in a statement.

"In doing so we have honored our profound ties of history and friendship with the people of Hong Kong, and we have stood up for freedom and autonomy — values both the UK and Hong Kong hold dear."

The UK government estimates around 300,000 Hong Kongers could migrate to the UK over the next five years, which would be beneficial for the British economy.

Hysteria Grips Establishment over GameStop Trading

One of the strangest things about the GameStop saga this week is how the mainstream media and prominent financiers have reacted, often with something bordering on panic.

Chris Cilliza, CNN Editor-at-large, said “Trumpism explains the GameStop stock surge.”

What’s the end game for the GameStop surgers? Like, now that they have proven the point that they can take a stock that the pros have declared moribund and revive it — at least for a moment — what do they do now? Because they don’t really believe that GameStop is suddenly the new Amazon or Apple or Google. It’s still mostly a business that derives its value from brick and mortar stores in malls. Which, again, is not exactly a big growth area in the coming years.

The point is that there is no real point beyond showing up the pros — proving to them that they aren’t as smart as they think they are and that they don’t have the ability to control everything.

Which, again, has its roots in Trumpism. The entire notion of Trump’s candidacy and presidency was to stick it to the elites. And then, well, uh, there wasn’t really a plan beyond that. The screwjob was the point.

Or maybe the “surgers” believe the company has brighter future than was reflected in its price and that its stock was too heavily shorted based on fundamentals? One thing that stands out to anyone reading the r/wallstreetbets message board on Reddit or the comments on related YouTube videos is how much energy went into analyzing the prospects of GameStop. It wasn’t just a sticking it to the man moment. And its kind of galling to insist that the price must have been right when GameStop was priced to doom but is definitely wrong now that it is priced to LOLZ, Diamond Hands, and Rocket, Rocket, Rocket.

“Mr. Gill said he wasn’t a rabble-rouser out to take on the establishment, just someone who believes investors can find value in unloved stocks,” the Wall Street Journal reported in an article about Keith Gill, one of the leaders of the GameStop bulls.

To be fair to the establishment types panicking at this little stock market insurgency, they are not entirely wrong to worry that the “surgers” are no longer taking direction from the experts. Retail investors did stage a rebellion against their Wall Street masters of the universe. This is a kind of deplorables uprising. And this will not be the last one.

But instead of adjusting to this new reality, the establishment types are trying to figure out how to stop it. On CNBC, former SEC Commissioner and board member of CIT Laura Unger, said the surge in GameStop and others creates questions “about the integrity of the market.” She then went on to liken people profiting from the trades to rioters at the U.S. Capitol.

“Everyone is scratching their heads over this. What should happen? What is the right thing we can do to control it or stop it? Not unlike what we saw on January 6th at the U.S. capitol,” Unger said.

Billionaire hedge fund manager Leon Cooperman, who has said he voted for Joe Biden based on his values, blasted GameStop traders.

“The reason the market is doing what it’s doing is, people are sitting at home, getting their checks from the government, basically trading for no commissions and no interest rates,” he said.

In fact, Gill is a certified financial analyst. And very likely pays a higher tax rate than the hedge fund managers like Cooperman.

Massachusetts Secretary of State Bill Galvin said the Redditor campaign had “no basis in reality.” Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) is calling on the SEC to investigate the Reddiors for market manipulation.

Of course, there’s some basis in reality for the GameStop run. Real people are buying shares at staggering prices. It just that reality is turning out to be a lot different than what Galvin, Cooperman, Unger, and CNN thought it was.

Texas AG Issues CIDs To Robinhood, Citadel, Others Over "Shocking Coordination" Between Hedge Funds, Trading Platforms To Halt Trading

The probes and lawsuits are coming.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sent out a Civil Investigative Demand to 13 entities, including Robinhood and Citadel, regarding the "suspension of stock trading and investing" requiring higher margin reserves for trading certain companies and suspending chat platform activity.

Other names which were also issued CIDs include Discord, Robinhood Markets, Robinhood Securities, Interactive Brokers, TD Ameritrade, TD Bank, E-Trade, WeBull Financial, Public Holdings, M1 Holdings, Citadel Financial, and Apex Clearing.

“Wall Street corporations cannot limit public access to the free market, nor should they censor discussion surrounding it, particularly for their own benefit. This apparent coordination between hedge funds, trading platforms, and web servers to shut down threats to their market dominance is shockingly unprecedented and wrong. It stinks of corruption,” said Attorney General Paxton.

“I’m hopeful that these companies will step up and cooperate with these CIDs in order to clear any confusion over why stock purchases were forcibly closed and why even conversation around these stocks was silenced.”

In addition to public statements and internal documents, the CIDs request copies of all terms of service, policies related to content control and moderation, and communications between platforms and moderators of chat servers, including decisions to limit, control, or prevent access to the Discord r/WallStreetBets server.

Seattle must pay $82,000 to Black Lives Matter lawyers in battle over police use of projectiles, pepper spray on peaceful protesters

The city of Seattle must pay $81,997.12 to lawyers for Black Lives Matter in a battle over police use of crowd control weapons on peaceful protesters last year, a federal judge has ruled.

The amount was a substantial reduction on the $263,708.50 sought by the lawyers who said they spent nearly 500 hours preparing their motions for contempt and sanctions.

But the city sought a much steeper reduction, arguing the lawyers only managed to convince the court that four out of 122 disputed uses of pepper spray and blast projectiles violated prior court orders.

“Plaintiffs’ success was indeed narrow. But to bring this motion, plaintiffs were required to parse complex and dynamic protests, during which hundreds of protestors and dozens of police officers exchanged countless projectiles,” U.S. District Judge Richard Jones wrote in his ruling.

Scared of the Truth: Pakistan’s War on Journalism

With sweat running down his face and his body aching, Saeed Ali Achakzai asked himself whether he really deserved the beating and the kicking, and this cell with no fan and no drinking water, in what felt like 45-degree heat.

Yes, he had said in his TV report that the COVID-19 quarantine camp in the Pakistani city of Chaman, on the border with Afghanistan, lacked proper facilities. The washrooms were in poor condition, he had said; people didn’t have enough water.

But was that such a crime?

The public deserved to know that around 200 camp occupants, some potentially infected with the virus, had broken through a gate and escaped, after protesting against management that had refused to let a sick woman be taken to hospital.

A few days after his report on the camp aired last summer, the Quetta-based reporter for the Urdu-language Samaa News was threatened, abducted, beaten, and jailed.

"My only crime was telling the truth,” Achakzai, 44, told OCCRP.

Google Australia CEO Mel Silva caught lying defending Google and admits Google censor their search results

Google have shot themselves in the foot publishing a video with Google Australia Managing Director Mel Silva admitting Google censor their search results and lying about the proposed new media laws. Google and Facebook are at war with the Australian federal government regarding the proposed new laws forcing Google and Facebook to pay large Australian media companies for promoting links to their articles.

Its a fairly complex issue and what happens with the new laws, the proposed media bargaining code, and what the various players do will likely transform the Australian media landscape for years.

Before watching the Google video it’s worth noting some of the background information to the video and Google’s recent threat to block searches in Australia.

I wrote an article last year on the proposed new laws titled “Rupert Murdoch’s attempt to shakedown Facebook and Google is underwritten by Scott Morrison and the Liberal Party” and not much has changed. I also wrote my own submissions for the ACCC’s enquiry (Click here to see all the submissions) and wrote another article which covered Google censoring this website and published the below video in that article which is still relevant now.

Google was caught censoring large media companies, such as The SMH and The Australian, out of search results a few weeks ago which they said was a trial. (Click here to read more) That is consistent with Google censoring my website out of many keyword search results which they have been doing since at least December last year.

Prosecution Files for Restitution on Behalf of Raniere’s Victims; Filing Under Seal, Raniere to Respond

The US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York has filed a letter with the court seeking restitution for the victims of Keith Raniere. The letter was filed under seal and accompanied by restitution claims made by individuals who say Raniere harmed them.

Judge Nicholas G. Garaufis’ subsequent order, which asks Raniere’s counsel to give him a date for filing a response, suggests that he is going to order Raniere to pay restitution to at least some of those making claims.

“ORDER: The court acknowledges receipt of the Government’s [997] Letter regarding restitution and of the accompanying restitution claims. The court will award restitution to the victims of Mr. Raniere’s offenses, according to terms to be determined after Mr. Raniere has an opportunity to respond, and to be set forth in a subsequent order. The court DIRECTS Mr. Raniere’s counsel to advise the court as to how much time it needs to respond to the restitution claims and recommendations submitted by the Government. Ordered by Judge Nicholas G. Garaufis on 1/27/2021.”

Raniere inherited the $8 million estate of one of his longtime partners, Pamela Cafritz, out of which restitution will likely be made.

It is unknown how many people will be designated victims by the judge. At the trial, there were witnesses that testified who are likely seeking restitution. Based on their verdict, the jury determined they were victims of specific crimes: Nicole, Jessica Joan, Sylvie, Daniela, James Loperfido (a Nxivm accountant whose computer was hacked into by Daniela, allegedly under Keith’s order), and Mark Vicente.

In addition to these, about 90 others have filed victim impact statements. Many of these will likely be seeking a share of the $8 million. How the judge will determine who is a victim and who is not and how much any of those claiming to be victims are entitled to receive remains to be seen.

Other than those who testified at his trial, Raniere will not be permitted to confront any of his accusers seeking his assets via cross-examination under oath. He is permitted to rebut their claims in a written filing.

Here's how the New York Times described the Second Stepdaughter's alternative appeal in an article announcing her new modeling gig:

In her selfies, she doesn’t wear much makeup and doesn’t carefully blow-dry her naturally curly hair. She shows off her armpit hair and cartoonish tattoos, which include eggs and bacon in the shape of a smiley face and a cow.

As Ivan Bart, president of IMG Models, explained in an interview with the Times, being a model is "not really about shape, size or gender anymore." Emhoff was a perfect fit for the organization, Bart said, because she exudes "cheekiness" and "joy," and "communicates this moment in time."

While most journalists seemed to agree with that assessment, there were a few exceptions. Slate published an article expressing frustration with "the way Emhoff’s deal has been conveyed and celebrated" as a norm-destroying coup, pointing out that there isn't anything particularly revolutionary or diverse about being a rich, white, tall, thin, female Brooklynite with tattoos and armpit hair.

Twitter Suspends Gateway Pundit Account for Posting Virginia Court Ruling on Virginia Mail-in Ballots — Claims the Court Ruling Incites Violence!

Earlier on Friday Gateway Pundit contributor Patty McMurray posted a report on Virginia Court Ruling that prevents officials (Democrats) from accepting late ballots without postmarks.

The case was over a Virginia Board of Elections rule issued in August that allowed mail-in ballots without a postmark to be received up to three days after the November election.

The Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF), on behalf of Thomas Reed, a local electoral board member, announced a court-approved consent decree to permanently prevent the Virginia State Board of Elections from accepting absentee ballots received up to three days after Election Day without postmarks in violation of Virginia law.

The report was released on Monday.

‘I Don’t Know The Answer’: Biden’s CDC Director Unsure Whether Or Not American-Made Vaccines Go To American Citizens

President Biden’s Center for Disease Control Director didn’t “know the answer” as to whether or not Pfizer vaccines produced in America would be staying in the country.

Center for Disease Control (CDC) Director Rochelle Walensky’s remarks prompted CBS host Tony Dokoupil to “call into doubt” how “reliable the projections are from the Biden administration.”

“I’m surprised to hear you say you don’t know whether the Michigan facility is pumping them out for the U.S. alone if you spent time this week trying to sort this out and then make promises. It calls into doubt, to some extent, how reliable the projections are from the Biden administration.”

Dokoupil’s comments followed him asking Walensky “are all the vaccines being made at the Pfizer facility in Michigan in this country staying in this country?”

Walensky reveals that she “doesn’t know the answer to that off the top of my head”:

“I know that they’re – I don’t know the answer to that off the top of my head. I do – you know – certainly the general would know that. I do – my job is to make sure that we get the vaccine that we have dedicated to this country committed and bought by this government. I want to remind folks that we have an anticipated 600 million doses that we will have by over the summer – enough to vaccinate all people over 16 here by the end of the summer. So we have secured as much as we need as fast as these manufacturers are making it here.”

War of words between China and US over COVID-19 probe

As the World Health Organisation investigates in Wuhan how the pandemic started, a war of words has broken out between China and the US.

Experts from the World Health Organisation visited a Wuhan hospital on Friday as the fieldwork began in a closely watched coronavirus origins probe that will take in a food market presumed to be “ground zero” of the pandemic.

But the WHO probe has led to a war of words between China and the United States, with Chinese officials rejecting it’s an investigation.

The United States wants a “robust and clear” international probe into the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic in China.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said it was “imperative we get to the bottom” of how the virus appeared and spread worldwide.

Ms Psaki highlighted “great concern” over “misinformation” from “some sources in China.”

The WHO insists the probe will be tethered tightly to the science behind how the virus jumped to humans.

Beijing is desperate to take the air out of the blame game and instead train attention on its handling of and recovery from the outbreak.

A Chinese foreign ministry spokesman on Friday flagged the visit as “a part of global research” into the pandemic.

“It is not an investigation,” Zhao Lijian told reporters.

In a tweet Thursday, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he had had a “frank discussion” with China’s Health Minister Ma Xiaowei.

“I asked that the international scientists get the support, access & data needed, and the chance to engage fully with their Chinese counterparts,” he said.
