Lawmaker Urges NY AG, DOJ To Subpoena Cuomo's Office Over Handling Of Pandemic

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) is demanding answers after a new report revealed New York state health officials underreported COVID-19-related nursing home deaths by as much as 50 percent in some places.

The New York House member characterized the revelations as “a massive corruption and coverup scandal at the highest level of New York State Government.” She blamed the Governor, the Secretary to the Governor, the New York State Health Commissioner, and the Governor’s staff for the worrisome findings, which also revealed that some nursing homes did not comply with infection control protocols and had placed residents at increased risk of harm.

“Every New Yorker deserves transparency, accountability, and answers regarding the orchestration of this illegal coverup,” Stefanik said in a statement.

Stefanik is now urging New York Attorney General Letitia James and the Justice Department to issue subpoenas to the administration of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, for documentation and communications related to his handling of the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus pandemic.

The 76-page report (pdf) was released on Jan. 28 following an investigation into nursing homes’ responses during the pandemic over allegations of patient neglect and other conduct. Preliminary data from the investigation suggests that many nursing home residents had died from COVID-19, the disease caused by the CCP Virus, in the hospital after they were transferred from their nursing homes.

These cases were not reflected in the state’s Department of Health’s (DOH) published total nursing home death data. The attorney general office compared data from 62 nursing homes, which represents 10 percent of the total facilities in New York, reported to its office, to data reported to DOH.

The investigation also found that some nursing homes underreported their resident deaths occurring in nursing homes to DOH.

“The OAG found that nursing home resident deaths appear to be undercounted by DOH by approximately 50 percent,” the attorney general’s office release stated.

The COVID-related nursing home deaths have been a focal point for Cuomo’s handling of the pandemic. He has repeatedly pushed back against assertions that his policy played any role in the deaths. The report is expected to trigger more scrutiny over Cuomo’s policies and handling of nursing homes amid new cases of the virus across the state and country.

“While we cannot bring back the individuals we lost to this crisis, this report seeks to offer transparency that the public deserves and to spur increased action to protect our most vulnerable residents,” James said in a statement on Thursday.

Facebook Bans "Robinhood Stock Traders Group" With 157,000 Members

Facebook has banned a group called ‘Robinhood stock traders’ that had 157,000 members, with its founder suggesting the group had been targeted by “major institutions.”

The group has no formal affiliation with the stock trading app of the name same that froze stock purchases for GameStop yesterday, prompting widespread complaints from its users.

The group’s 23-year-old founder Alan Tran told Reuters that the social media giant removed the page citing “adult sexual exploitation,” but provided no further reasoning for the ban.

According to Tran, who also heads up his own investment group, HaiKhuu Trading, bots may have flagged the page because of the use of the term “gain porn,” which is a phrase relating to stock purchases and has no actual sexual connotation.

Earlier this month, the group was also listed as a “dangerous organization,” but this label was subsequently removed by Facebook and the page was restored.

“The major institutions are attempting to silence our community. We are positively impacting people’s lives and they are attacking our group because we are more powerful than them,” Tran wrote in a Facebook post, arguing “there is power in masses.”

Tran has now set up a replacement page, although he expects that to be deleted too, saying Facebook is “not a free platform.”

Earlier this week, a Discord server used by the WallStreetBets community, the Reddit forum responsible for the populist-driven surge in Gamestop stocks, was banned with Discord alleging that it had contained “hate speech.”

As we explain in the video below, Big Tech companies are abusing the “hate speech” label to shut down communications, with many asserting that this is merely an excuse to censor content harmful to hedge fund billionaires.

Joe Biden Extends ‘Temporary’ Amnesty for 7K Syrian Nationals in U.S.

President Joe Biden has extended a temporary amnesty program for nearly 7,000 Syrian nationals living in the United States.

On Friday, Biden’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced it would extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to 6,700 Syrian nationals in the U.S. who would otherwise be eligible for deportation.

The renewal of TPS for Syrians means those who meet particular requirements can stay in the U.S. until September 2022, when the program must be renewed again by DHS. Despite supposedly being temporary, TPS for Syrians has been in effect since March 2012 due to “armed conflict, environmental disasters, and extraordinary and temporary conditions” in the region.

The Obama administration extended TPS for Syrians in 2015 and 2016 before the Trump administration extended the program twice as well.

TPS has become a quasi-amnesty for foreign nationals created under the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1990 (INA), which prevents their deportation to countries that have suffered famine, war, or natural disasters. Since the Clinton administration, TPS has been transformed into a de facto amnesty program as the Bush, Obama, Trump, and now Biden administrations have continuously renewed the program for a variety of countries.

Most recently, on his way out of office, former President Trump implemented a similar quasi-amnesty for at least 94,000 Venezuelan nationals living in the U.S. That program, called Deferred Enforced Departure (DED), will last for 18 months until the Biden administration can renew or end it.

Democrats Seek to Ban Federal Agencies from Using ‘Illegal Alien’ Term

A group of House Democrats is seeking to ban the term “alien,” and thus “illegal alien,” from being used by federal agencies to refer to noncitizens and those who are illegally present in the United States.

Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX), along with 11 other members of the House Hispanic Caucus, have filed legislation to eliminate the term “alien” at federal agencies when referring to noncitizens.

“To prohibit Executive agencies from using the derogatory term ‘alien’ to refer to an individual who is not a citizen or national of the United States, to amend chapter 1 of title 1, United States Code, to establish a uniform definition for the term ‘foreign national,’ and for other purposes,” a summary of the legislation reads.

A ban on the use of the term “alien” at federal agencies would mean the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice would no longer be allowed to use the term “illegal alien” when referring to those in the U.S. illegally.

Reports this week indicate that memos have already been issued at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency — tasked with enforcing federal immigration law — to halt usage of the terms “alien” and “illegal alien.”

Similarly, President Joe Biden has suggested the change as well. A draft of his legislation to increase legal immigration levels and provide amnesty to most illegal aliens also required that the term “alien” be removed from federal law and replaced with “noncitizen” which does not distinguish between legal immigrants, visa holders, green card holders, and illegal aliens.

Washington Post writer says Trump should never be allowed to have a presidential library

"Trump wants a library. He must never have one," reads the WaPo headline.

The Washington Post turned to Philip Kennicott, a Pulitzer Prize-winning art and architecture critic who first worked for the paper critiquing classical music and culture, to argue against former President Trump ever getting his own presidential library.

Every president since Franklin D. Roosevelt has a library, but Kennicott said Trump "must never have one."

"Former president Donald Trump will have an official portrait in the National Portrait Gallery at some point," Kennicott writes. "And in states where he remains popular, he could have airports, bridges and schools named for him. But Trump must never have an official presidential library, and Congress should move quickly to make sure he never will."

He also says Trump should never even be allowed to try to have a library because even that would "cause further damage to the country."

"That is why Congress should use this moment to reconsider the legislation that helped create and shape the presidential libraries now administered by the National Archives, not just to prevent Trump from perpetrating one last, giant grift, but to reform the system so it serves the country better," Kennicott continues. "This is long overdue, and would need to be done even if Trump weren’t trying to raise $2 billion for a Trump center. But his intention to do so makes this urgent, even an issue of national security."

But then Kennicott argued that historians need access to Trump's presidential documents, which would be held in a library.

"It is imperative to the nation’s future that we know how and why authoritarianism became so deeply and pervasively rooted in the Trump administration. Historians, journalists and biographers need immediate access to this material (with the minimal oversight necessary by professional, nonpartisan archivists) to help educate the American public on the greatest threat to the republic since the Civil War."

Then he again argued Trump should never have one.

"So even a privately funded and operated Trump presidential library, which would be devoted to whitewashing his record and rewriting history, is a terrible and even dangerous idea. Further, given Trump’s alleged misuse of charitable funds, including self-dealing, waste and other illegal activities, at his now dissolved New York-based foundation, any intention to start another public entity can only be considered a crime scene waiting to happen," Kennicott wrote.

While Trump rarely talks about plans for a library, an unknown person or group in December set up a satirical website djtlibrary.com.

The design concept includes a "COVID Memorial" with reflecting pool, an "Alt-Right Auditorium" replete with Confederate flags, along with a few tongue-in-cheek exhibitions, such as "Tax Evasion 101" and the "Hall of Enablers."

The sites's suggested library location: on the U.S.-Mexico border in Nogales, Ariz.

The Los Angeles Times tracked down the site’s architect – an actual architect, whom the paper didn’t identify.
