New jersey on fire ?

This was the first fire from yesterday

Firefighters from 25 towns are continuing to battle a raging blaze in the freezing cold at a recycling plant in Passaic County Saturday morning after the fire erupted overnight, with only one injury reported and all 70 plant workers deemed safe, officials said.

Just after 11 p.m. Friday, the eight-alarm fire broke out at the Atlantic Coast Fibers plant on 7th Street in the city of Passaic, Fire Chief Patrick Trentacosti said in a Facebook Live video from the scene with Mayor Hector Lora.

At least one explosion occurred at the plant, which is essentially a building-sized tinder box, filled with tanks of oil, gasoline and diesel surrounded by plastic, Lora said.

Big fire in Passaic NJ

Flames shoot high above a recycling center in the city of Passaic after a large fire erupted late Friday night, Jan. 29. The fire continues to burn Saturday morning.

“It’s burned all night,” the mayor said. “It literally has taken an entire block. It’s a recycling company so everything inside — you can imagine — is conducive for burning.

“It created a perfect storm of dangerous situations for our firefighters,” he added.

ABC7 in New York reported several explosions occurred inside the recycling center, and said most of the main building collapsed.

As of Saturday morning, the fire continued to tear through the building, with the droves of firefighters struggling to keep the blaze under control in frigid temperatures that begin to freeze the water used to try to douse the flames, Lora said.

The one injury reported was to a firefighter who slipped and fell on ice, the mayor said. “It’s like an ice-skating rink out here.”

Firefighters continuing the battle the flames were setting up a Neptune pumping system to attempt to pump water from the nearby Passaic River to soak the flames, he said.
