Can silver be found everywhere?

 

No. Most precious metals are precious because they tend to be concentrated together in the same place.

 

Some metals, like aluminum, readily combine with oxygen and get distributed in a wide variety or rocks and soil. Aluminum is also light, so it rises naturally in the earthโ€™s crust. This makes it incredibly common.

 

Silver, on the other hand, along with other precious metals like gold and platinum, will combine with oxygen, but rather more slowly (gold and platinum donโ€™t combine with oxygen at all). As such, it doesnโ€™t readily form minerals. Its also quite heavy so, it doesnโ€™t tend to rise in the earthโ€™s crust. As such, pretty much all of our silver is the result of silver containing lava that rose close to the earthโ€™s surface, then solidified. The molten lava allows the metals to separate out from the rest of the minerals by density, so the precious metals tend to congregate where conditions are favourable.

 

As such, silver, gold and platinum are generally found in veins - long thin strings of metal trapped within harder rock. Some of it weathers out and lies on the ground, but most of it is deep underground. The vast majority of rock contains little to no silver, but some contains a lot of it (well, at least by proportion)

 

In order to make it worthwhile, you have to be able to get about 700 grams of silver out of one ton of ore (by contrast, 30 grams of gold is economic). That means finding silver rich rock, which means looking for signs of it in the rock (some rock formations are more likely to hold silver) and then boring into the rock with a core driller, then running tests on the silver content.
