'AT 23, Raphael de Rothschild – scion of one of the world’s richest families – thought he was invincible.

But fate proved him wrong on a chilly Saturday afternoon two weeks ago, when he collapsed on a Chelsea street, turned blue, and died of an apparent heroin overdose after partying at a friend’s 10th Avenue loft.'

' De Rothschild’s Harvard-educated father, Nathaniel, had been working in the French Rothschild bank until the early 1980s, when he moved to New York and began working here with London-based Jacob Rothschild. He now heads up the family’s $8 billion financial-services empire.

De Rothschild’s mother is the daughter of the former commander in chief of the Israeli navy.

IN 1996, Amschel Rothschild, 41, who had been expected to take over NM Rothschild, hanged himself with a bathrobe belt from a towel rack in the Hotel Le Bristol Paris.

His London funeral attracted 600 mourners including the British treasury secretary and Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones.

In 1923, Amschel’s grandfather, Charles, who briefly ran the British bank, also killed himself – slitting his throat after battling encephalitis.

Also in 1996, Baron Benjamin Rothschild, now 34, was arrested at an airport in England and fined $600 for heroin possession.

Oscar Rothschild, from the Austrian branch of the family, shot himself around 1909 when his father decreed he could not marry the daughter of a boarding-house proprietor because she was beneath him.'
