The price tag for extra security at the state Capitol leading up to the presidential inauguration in January was more than first estimated, new numbers show.
The state Department of Finance had originally said it would cost nearly $19 million for extra security measures for the days surrounding the inauguration of President Joe Biden, which came on the heels of supporters of former President Donald Trump storming the nation's Capitol.
State officials said Friday, however, that the cost was more than $22 million. The bulk of that money, $18.5 million, was for the California Highway Patrol, including the cost of extra staffing and temporary lighting and fencing around the Capitol.
Although there had been threats of violence targeting state capitols, the protests and unrest did not materialize as feared.
