Anal Swab Covid Test Won’t Make You Waddle Like A ‘Penguin’, China Says

TOPLINE Chinese officials reassured members of the public Monday that newly introduced anal swab coronavirus tests will not make them waddle like penguins after a video purportedly showing people struggling to walk after using them went viral online.

Authorities said a video of people waddling out of a hospital, which reportedly was viewed millions of times before being taken down, does not show people who have been subjected to the anal swab test.

The video, set to a laughing track, is doctored and fake, officials said, though an explanation on what the video does show was not offered.

The new tests, which involve inserting a cotton-tipped swab about 1-2 inches into the rectum and which Chinese authorities say can detect the virus more accurately than oral and nasal methods, are only used in high-risk cases owing to the less-than-convenient method of testing.

Earlier this month, Ramiro Sepulveda, a postal worker in Regina, Saskatchewan, refused to deliver a sample edition of The Epoch Times and was suspended for three days without pay.

The free edition, which went out to neighbourhoods in Ontario, Saskatchewan, B.C., and the Maritimes, included a section headlined “Communist China’s Silent War Against the West.” It includes a number of older pieces published by Epoch last fall. One article republished from last Sept claimed that Beijing had “infiltrated almost every major avenue of life in countries like the United States and Canada,” including the office of Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi. Nenshi’s office responded that it had no knowledge of such a list.

The front page featured a story alleging that donations from Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg to the Democratic Party were deliberately used to “undermine” the U.S. presidential election. An op-ed by conservative commentator Conrad Black called COVID-19 a “most brilliant and imaginative geopolitical offensive” by the Chinese government.

“We have to rethink what counts as hate speech in Canada both online and offline,” Matthew Green, Member of Parliament for Hamilton-Centre and Public Services and Procurement critic for the New Democratic Party, told VICE World News. “Unfortunately we often leave it up to people who aren’t competent enough to define what hate is, and can’t always recognize it when they see it.”

In the early 2010s, the CIA ran a fake vaccination program in Abbottabad, offering free Hepatitis B vaccines to children in an attempt to collect DNA evidence linking Osama bin Laden to the compound where he was suspected of residing. It is unclear how samples were to be collected or how they would lead to bin Laden, but when news of this scheme broke, it added proof to existing conspiracy theories about vaccinations. As a consequence, many local leaders began urging people not to vaccinate their kids, various districts banned vaccination teams, and the Taliban issued a fatwa against vaccination programs. To this day, local leaders rail against vaccines as Western spying programs.

In 2013, in response to pressure from leaders in public health and science, the CIA promised to stop using vaccination programs to gather intelligence. However, the legacy of the fake vaccine campaign in Pakistan has understandably not been easy to overcome. Trust in public health officials has been dangerously eroded.
