The thought is quite scary but there is a theoretical way to cause a phone to overheat which could in turn cause a battery to go off.

 

It’s called a ‘white out’ where a phone is sent malicious code or simple ‘supergif’ where a white image is processed extremely rapidly to the point of cpu throttling.

 

The reason why it works is because the color white is ffffffff which translated into binary as all 1 and no zeros.

 

That’s cpu juiced to the max and given the fact that I’m a phone everything is crammed so tightly it’s completely possible.
