Eastman under investigation for possible business ties to Mexican drug cartels
KINGSPORT, Tenn. — Eastman CEO Mark Costa confirmed to News 5's Caleb Perhne Friday the company is under investigation in Mexico. Eastman's operation in the country is accused of having business dealings with drug cartels.
The Mexican government is investigating. Costa said the allegations simply aren't true.
“We take these allegations of elicit behavior or practices very seriously no matter where they may happen in the world and have thoroughly investigated whether there was any merit to this allegation, and we have found that there was no merit to it at all,” Costa said.
“But you were subpoenaed?” News 5’s Caleb Perhne pressed Costa.
“There is an investigation going on,” he said. “We've done the analysis, and our position is that there was nothing that was illegal or inappropriate that has happened.”
Eastman's Mexico plant produces resins used in adhesives, chewing gum and ink.
