Russian Expert in WHO Mission Says One Can Hardly Imagine Leak From Wuhan Institute of Virology

Allegations that SARS-CoV-2 may have been accidentally leaked from Shi's lab has become one of the popular conspiracy theories. Chinese authorities have repeatedly denied the accusations of a possible lab leak.

The laboratory of the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which was accused of leaking the coronavirus, is well-equipped, and it is very difficult to imagine a leak from there, said Vladimir Dedkov, an expert of the WHO group from Russia, deputy director for scientific work of the St. Petersburg Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology.

Wuhan was the world's first cluster of patients infected with COVID-19, detected in December 2019.

“Of course, it was important for our mission to visit this facility, talk to our colleagues and see how everything is organized there. It is well-organized. I do not know who criticized them, the laboratory is perfectly equipped, It is hard for me to imagine that something could have leaked from there,” Dedkov said.

On Wednesday, WHO experts currently located in Wuhan visited the Wuhan Institute of Virology, including the highly isolated BSL-4 laboratory, which was, according to rumors, the location of an alleged "leak" of the virus or the possible "artificial" origin of COVID-19. The WHO team only began fieldwork last week, after completing two weeks of quarantine upon arrival.

Ever since the outbreak of the COVID-19 in Wuhan at the end of December 2019, various theories have repeatedly appeared in the media and on the Internet that the new coronavirus could have "leaked" from the laboratory of the Wuhan Institute of Virology. The Wuhan institute issued an open letter back in January last year, in which it called these assumptions false rumors and stressed that the conscience of the institute's staff was "absolutely clear."

Dedkov added, however, that there were certain conditions allowing for coronavirus' spread at Wuhan's market, although the virus could have originated from elsewhere.

"We visited the market. I'm not very familiar with the sanitary rules of China, but looking at this, extrapolating to our legislation, of course, the market is very far from perfect… It is not for sure that it happened there, there is no evidence that the virus originated there, maybe the virus appeared in another place, but hypothetically, there are all conditions for the spread of the virus there," Dedkov said.

Wuhan's Huanan Market, which sold vegetables, seafood, and even bushmeat, closed on January 1, 2020 when an epidemiological investigation into an outbreak of an unknown disease led to it. The first sick people worked at this market. However, scientists still have not come to an unambiguous conclusion regarding the role it played in the spread of the virus.

According to the most recent data from Johns Hopkins University, the total number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in mainland China has reached 100,177 since the start of the pandemic, with the death toll currently standing at 4,820. The number of daily infection cases for the country of 1.3 billion is in the dozens.

John Kasich: GOP Will Begin to Die if It Stays a Trump Party

Former Gov. John Kasich (R-OH) said Wednesday on CNN’s “Situation Room” that the Republican Party will die if it continues to be the party of Donald Trump.

While discussing if House Republicans are going to remove Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) from her committee appointments, Kasich said, “I was the chairman of the committee that balanced the federal budget. I was the one that was able to do reform inside the federal government. I did so many things down there that were conservative. And now these guys are off on some — I don’t even know where they are — they’re on some crazy tangent here.”

Panelist Dana Bash said, “That’s the point. They are the Republican party now, governor. The House Republicans are very much representative of a very large chunk of the GOP. Until they, you know, unless they do something to say these views are not okay and, yes, they’re speaking out, but take action about it, then talking about conservative fiscal responsibility and all those things, you know, it gets drowned out. Don’t you think?”

Kasich said, “I agree with that, Dana. Here is the thing. The Senate Republicans, Mitch McConnell, couldn’t put out a stronger statement. He’s saying that this lady should be disciplined, should lose her committees in the least, and should be isolated. So he’s a pretty big spokesperson. This gets back to what’s going on inside the party. Is it a Trump party, not a Trump party? If it stays a Trump party in the long term, it will not be successful. It will begin to die. Frankly, it’s dying already, because a lot of people have left the party. There is a chance for them to get back on their feet, but if they can’t even make a simple decision about this lady and they can’t decide to support Liz Cheney and her vote of consciousness, what does that tell you about those people? Disgraceful.”

The Economic Value of Insect Pollinators Is Much Higher Than Previously Thought

The economic value of insect pollinators was $34 billion in the U.S. in 2012, much higher than previously thought, according to researchers at the University of Pittsburgh and Penn State University. The team also found that areas that are economically most reliant on insect pollinators are the same areas where pollinator habitat and forage quality are poor.

“Pollinators like bees play an extremely important role in agriculture,” explained senior author Vikas Khanna, Wellington C. Carl Faculty Fellow and associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at Pitt’s Swanson School of Engineering. “The insects that pollinate farmers’ crops underpin our ecosystem biodiversity and function, human nutrition, and even economic welfare.”

But some of those busy little bees are headed for crisis—one-third of managed honey bee colonies die each winter in the U.S., and populations of many wild pollinator species are showing declines as well.

Using publicly available price and production data and existing pollination field studies, the team determined economic dependence of U.S. crops on insect pollination services at the county level, as well as areas where the habitat for wild pollinators has been reduced. One key finding is that the economic value that is dependent on insect pollination totaled $34 billion in 2012, much higher than previously thought. The team looked at 2012 because it was the most recent year for which data were available.

“The value of insects as part of our economy is apparent when you look at the well-established connection between farming and beekeeping. Farmers sometimes will buy or rent bee colonies to help pollinate their crops when there aren’t enough wild bees in the area,” said Khanna. “We’ve found that some of the areas that are economically most reliant on insect pollinators are the same areas where pollinator habitat and forage quality are poor.”

The researchers found that 20 percent of U.S. counties produce 80 percent of total economic value that can be attributed to wild and managed pollinators. Their findings will inform conservation efforts and ensure sustainable production of key crops.

Arizona Senate Resolution Threatens Arrest of Maricopa County Board for Failure to Adhere to Subpoena for Election Equipment & Ballots.

The Arizona Senate is set to pass a contempt resolution finding that the Maricopa County Board has failed to comply with a subpoena demanding access to elections equipment and ballots cast in the November election, with the potential threat of arrest alluded to in the sure-to-pass resolution.

The Associated Press reported Wednesday:

The Senate introduced the resolution Wednesday afternoon. Timing on a full Senate vote is unclear, but all 16 Republican senators are listed as sponsors, meaning it is virtually certain to pass.

If the resolution is enacted, the five members of the county board could be arrested for failing to comply. It authorizes Senate President Karen Fann to take “all legal action” needed to enforce the subpoena.

The document (in full below) demands:

That the President of the Arizona Senate take all legal action pursuant to section 41-1153, Arizona Revised Statutes, to enforce the subpoena.

Section 41-1153 states:

A. If a witness neglects or refuses to obey a legislative subpoena, or, appearing, neglects or refuses to testify, the senate or the house may, by resolution entered in the journal, commit him for contempt.

B. A witness neglecting or refusing to attend in obedience to a subpoena may be arrested by the sergeant-at-arms and brought before the senate or house upon authority of a copy of the resolution signed by the president or speaker, and countersigned by the secretary or chief clerk.

AP continued:

The Senate has demanded access to voting machines and all 2.1 million ballots cast in the election. The board has said it can’t comply because ballots are sealed by law and the voting machines the Senate wants to examine need to remain secure.

Board Chairman Jack Sellers said Wednesday he was frustrated that the Senate was threatening to find the board in contempt, saying he met personally with Senate President Karen Fann and thought both sides agreed to try to settle the issue.

“I want to be clear: the county will participate in any court hearing with the Senate if they plan to argue the restrictions on ballots should be waived,” Sellers said in a statement. “Instead of suggesting that we are violating the laws the Legislature wrote, they should turn their attention to finding a solution.

“If they truly believe in the legality of their position, they will join us in seeking a solution through the courts,” Sellers said.

Republicans Reward Pro-Impeachment, Anti-Trump Liz Cheney With Leadership Role Despite 10% Approval Rating

Republicans double down on anti-Trump going into 2021.

In a closed door meeting between top Republican legislators, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) has retained her leadership role after Republicans voted in a secret ballot. This comes after Cheney voted to impeach President Donald Trump, has repeatedly spoken out against him, and has only a 10% approval rating among her own constituents.

The overwhelming majority of Republican legislators voted to keep Cheney, despite widespread accusations that she does not represent her constituents. She retained her leadership position with 145 votes, as opposed to 61 votes to oust her. One Republican voted “present.”

🚨CHENEY SURVIVES.

61 vote to oust her

145 vote to keep her

1 present

— Jake Sherman (@JakeSherman) February 4, 2021

This also comes after Rep. Kevin McCarthy, the top Republican in the House of Representatives, who nearly in the same breath called fellow Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene an anti-Semitic conspiracy theorist, endorsed Cheney’s leadership bid. McCarthy has repeatedly defended Cheney.

Cheney’s behavior was so reprehensible among Republican voters in Wyoming that she was censured by the Wyoming Republican Party days after the party posted a scathing letter containing remarks they received from their constituents.

Cheney also now has an embarrassingly low 10% approval rating among her own constituents. National File reported:

A survey undertaken by the Save America PAC has found that support for US Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), once one of the Republican Party’s rising stars and the number 3 most powerful Republican in the House of Representatives, has fallen to a devastatingly low 10 percent among Wyoming Republicans.

The survey, paid for by Save America, President Donald Trump’s new Political Action Committee (PAC), painted a dreary picture for Cheney’s re-election chances, as well as her current political standing.

Cheney’s drastic decline in popularity among her Republican colleagues and her constituency began immediately after her vote to impeach then-President Trump on the unsubstantiated claim that he contributed to the chaos and violence at the US Capitol Building on January 6, 2021.

Some have suggested the move represents Republicans caring more about preserving the current balance of power within their own party than pursuing policies and candidates that are capable of representing their voters.

PM holds 'warm and engaging call' with Biden

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has detailed his "very warm and engaging call" with United States President Joe Biden addressing the relationship between the two nations.

"He [Biden] sees the Australia-US relationship as providing the anchor for peace and security in our region. And that is true. We share that view," Mr Morrison said.

"So, we affirmed our commitment to the things that absolutely always matter - those relationships, particularly the alliance relationships, but also the Five Eyes relationships and the broadening of that agenda on the Five Eyes.

"Whether it's on COVID and whether it's on the economic recovery, global and regional security issues, the multilateral

initiatives and reforms that we are partnering in, but also, as we discussed today, achieving a net-zero pathway through technology, and the cooperation that is needed to do that, and the work that has already begun from the discussion between special envoy Secretary Kerry and Minister Taylor,

"And I had the opportunity to discuss how the United States, and as Secretary Kerry said the other day, and I said it in the Parliament, that it is a game-changing statement to understand that our goal is global emissions, not just emissions in some country."

Mr Morrison said he invited Mr Biden to Australia to celebrate 70 years of the ANZUS treaty, to which Mr Biden responded he needed no special reason to come to Australia.

A Series Of Fortunate Events For The ECB

Over the past two weeks some key euro area economic data releases have printed to the upside, with the surprise indices (such as that computed by Bloomberg) having remained highly elevated. Strong inflation (however temporary that may prove to be, given it is the result of one-off and base effects), for example, and modestly better-than-expected GDP data in the euro area present risks to the consensus view that further monetary policy easing will be needed later this year and may instead lead the ECB down a wait-and-see path in 2021.

Inflation

Euro area HICP inflation rose strongly in January, with all of the big four surprising to the upside. The most notable rise came from Germany, where inflation rose to 1.6% y-o-y from -0.7%, but there were significant rises too in France (to 0.8% from zero), Italy (to 0.5% from -0.3%) and Spain (to 0.6% from -0.6%). Overall, euro area inflation in January rose to 0.9% from -0.3%, an upside surprise of 0.3pp, while core inflation rose to 1.4% from 0.2% in the previous month, an upside surprise of 0.5pp.

The particularly sharp rise in German inflation was due to some policy-specific factors such as the reversal of the VAT cut that had been in place since the middle of last year, and the implementation of the climate package. In addition, it appears that inflation was also boosted by a change in weights within the HICP basket. As required by Eurostat (see here), most statistical institutes in Europe changed their HICP weights in January 2021 in response to changes in consumption patterns linked to the pandemic. As explained by ECB Executive Board member Schnabel in her recent interview with Deutschlandfunk, the significant shift in individual goods’ weights within the basket makes it “very difficult to compare the [inflation] figures over time”.

NC Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson Slams Liberal Media Outlet For Cartoon Depicting Republicans As KKK Members

Republican Mark Robinson is the first black lieutenant governor of North Carolina. You may remember him as the man who went viral for defending law abiding gun owners at a town meeting by saying “I am the majority!”

This week, on the second day of Black History Month, a liberal media outlet published a cartoon depicting Robinson and other Republicans as members of the KKK.

He fought back, as you’ll see in the amazing video below.

The Washington Examiner reports:

North Carolina lieutenant governor blasts local news outlet for cartoon depicting Republicans as KKK members

North Carolina’s lieutenant governor is taking issue with a cartoon posted by a local news channel depicting Republicans as members of the Ku Klux Klan.

“It’s something we cannot stand for, folks,” Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, a Republican and the first black lieutenant governor in the history of the Tar Heel state, said in a press conference Tuesday.

“On the second day of Black History Month, the first black lieutenant governor of North Carolina has been portrayed as [racist],” Robinson added. “That you would portray a black man, just because he’s in the GOP, as a Klansman …. the hypocrisy is mind-numbing, folks.”

The cartoon, posted online by WRAL-TV, shows an elephant, the symbol of the Republican Party, wearing a Klan robe and posing as a member of the school board, which Robinson is a part of.

Here’s the disgusting cartoon:

Robinson held a press conference where he called out WRAL and asked them if this is how they want to represent themselves. He also reminded people that it was not Republicans who were connected to the KKK. That was Democrats.

Watch the whole thing, this is amazing:
