Thiol
So the reason marijuana and skunks can smell similar is because they are releasing chemicals with similar moieties on them, not because they're the same chemical. Personally, I find that some coffees can also smell very strongly of skunk. For the really dedicated, the chemical group you're detecting as the "skunk smell" is thiol. We're pretty good at detecting the smell of sulfur. . . rotten eggs, poisonous sulfur clouds around hot springs, etc. In fact, we're so well attuned to detecting the sulfur smell that they use mercaptans as the "smell" in natural gas. Methane itself is undetectable, so they inject some sulfur-containing organics (mercaptans) to warn people of gas leaks.

OWLS & skunks
The defensive spray of skunks consists mainly of low-molecular-weight thiols and derivatives with a foul odor, which protects the skunk from predators.
Owls are able to prey on skunks, as they lack a sense of smell.[39]
