Gilbert Orrantia's sister Ana Murphy is head of nursing at ASU.

 

Biography

 

Ana Orrantia Murphy is a Clinical Assistant Professor and Barrett Honors College faculty in ASU’s Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation. She received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Arizona State University in December 1982. Upon graduation, she was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force Nurse Corps. She spent 7 years on active duty, including a 2.5 year tour of duty at Torrejon Air Base in Madrid, Spain. She was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain and received numerous military citations for her service. She earned a Master of Science in Community Health Nursing from ASU in 1993 and began her career as a nurse educator. She was residential faculty for Maricopa Community Colleges for 10 years before accepting a position as a Faculty Associate at ASU in 2012. In 2017, she accepted a position as Clinical Assistant Professor in the Pre-Licensure Program for Edson College. Her clinical experience is varied from adult medical-surgical, cardiac, all areas of maternal-child nursing, and community health. Teaching experience includes didactic and clinical in nursing fundamentals, adult health, obstetrics, and community health. She has also taught in various experiential (simulation) lab courses. Ana has been a prenatal educator for 32 years and continues as such for a major hospital system in the Phoenix area. During semester breaks she travels to colleges and universities throughout the United States teaching national nursing licensure exam review courses. She is the Co-Faculty Advisor for the Student Nurses Association.

 

Professor Murphy’s international experience includes a medical mission in Honduras; Spanish studies in Guadalajara, Mexico; living, working, traveling in Spain and Europe for 2.5 years; and leading study abroad programs for ASU. She has been the Co-faculty Director for the Edson College Study Abroad Program in Peru for the summers of 2018 and 2019 and will be the Co-Faculty Director of Edson College’s new Study Abroad Program in Kenya for the summer of 2020. During the 2020 spring semester she will be the faculty for the new Barrett GlobalResolve Downtown course. She will be working with students from various disciplines to create a meaningful health promotion intervention to implement in Naco, Mexico.
