Epstein estate suspends compensation offers to victims due to 'funding uncertainty
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (WPEC) — The Epstein Victims' Compensation Program announced Thursday that all compensation offers for Jeffrey Epstein's victims will be temporarily suspended due to "funding uncertainty."
Jordana H. Feldman, the program's independent administrator, says all officers will be held until after the Mar. 25, 2021 claims filing deadline, or until the claims can be fully funded and paid, because of uncertainty whether the estate has access to cash.
“Although I sincerely regret having to take this action, I have concluded that it is necessary to protect the interests of eligible claimants who have not yet resolved their claims through the Program,” said Ms. Feldman.
“Issuing a compensation offer that cannot be timely and fully funded and paid, consistent with the way the Program has operated to date, would compromise claimants’ interests and the guiding principles of the Program. I remain deeply committed to ensuring that the Program continues to operate with transparency and integrity, and that all eligible claimants receive the compensation and validation they deserve.”
Under the program protocol, the estate agreed to “pay all eligible claims based on the Administrator’s determination and represented that sufficient assets and liquidity existed to pay all claims." When the available funds for claim payments fall below a designated amount, the estate must quickly replenish those funds in order to ensure there's money to pay claims.
But on Feb. 3, Heldman was informed by the estate that it didn't have enough "liquidity" to replenish the funds needed for the most recent request and didn't know when that additional cash would be available, prompting her announcement to suspend the offers.
However, the program will continue to accept filings, review claims, and hold meetings with victims so that it will be easier to resume issuing compensation offers.
