The Green and Libertarian parties have been around for a while. They hold no offices that I know of. Neither Rand nor Ron Paul belong to the Libertarian Party, and argue against it.
The US election system is generally, most votes wins, which favors two parties. In Europe, multiple parties are favored, particularly as they are Parlimentary gov'ts.
