The Second Amendment community has tried very hard to get members of the Judiciary Committee to persuade attorney general nominee William Barr to renounce his long-standing support for gun control. Opposing his nomination is not a position we relish. But if members of the Senate choose to ignore his record on guns, they should not ignore his role in the Ruby Ridge scandal.

‘No families are opting out’: Utah school REVERSES decision to allow kids skip Black History Month classes after backlash

A charter school in Utah has made a U-turn on the decision to allow families to “exercise their civil rights” and to opt children out of lessons relating to Black History Month, after facing a major backlash online.

“We regret that after receiving requests, an opt-out form was sent out concerning activities planned during this month of celebration,” Maria Montessori Academy’s board of directors announced on Sunday.

The school in North Ogden, which has a majority white student base according to the Utah State Board of Education, uses Black History Month to incorporate specific teachings about the history of black Americans in both social studies and history classes. After receiving a handful of complaints, last week the school sent families an opt-out letter offering everyone an option to “exercise their civil rights to not participate in Black History Month at the school.”

A law professor serving on Facebook’s independent oversight board is resigning her post to join the Justice Department’s civil rights division on Monday.

A notable transition: Pamela Karlan, a Stanford Law professor who was chosen as one of the group’s 20 original members, has been tapped to serve as principal deputy assistant attorney general in the civil rights division for the Biden administration, the board said.

“Pam Karlan’s legal and civil rights expertise played an important part in shaping the Board and we’re grateful for her contributions,” board spokesperson John Taylor said in a statement. “The Trustees and Board members congratulate Pam on her new role and wish her the very best.”

Trump’s Lawyer Previews Defense Strategy, Says Will Use Videos of Democrats During Trial

“I think you can count on that,” Bruce Castor said when asked if he’d use videos of Democrats like Maxine Waters during the trial. “If my eyes look a little red to the viewers, it’s because I’ve been looking at a lot of video.”

Last week, President Trump announced a new team of lawyers who would be presenting his defense during the Senate’s impeachment trial, which is scheduled to begin later this week.

In a statement released to the media, David Schoen and Bruce L. Castor Jr. were named as his attorneys in the trial. Castor, who is the lead attorney, is a former Solicitor General for Pennsylvania. Schoen, a civil rights lawyer and criminal defense attorney, has been practicing law for over three decades. Schoen is also one of the lawyers who represented Roger Stone.

The team filed a legal brief on Tuesday that gave a glimpse into what their case will look like once the trial starts on Tuesday. Their primary argument will be that the Senate trial is unconstitutional because Trump is no longer in office. Further, they will argue that Trump’s speech did not incite the Capitol rioters and that he had a First Amendment right to say what he did:

Texas base will be home to Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter jets, Rep. Kay Granger says

Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth is set to be the home of F-35 fighter jets, new cargo aircraft and an airborne medical transport, U.S. Rep. Kay Granger said Monday.

Twenty-six Lockheed Martin F-35s will replace the aging F-16s used by the 301st Fighter Wing squadron, Granger said during a press conference at the base. Having the F-35s in Fort Worth has been in the works since March 2020. The fighter jets are built at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics in Fort Worth, which is next to the base.

The 301st Fighter Wing squadron is expected to receive its first F-35 jet in the summer of 2024, according to a press release..

National Guard’s post-riot deployment cost at least $480 million

The rapid buildup of National Guard troops in Washington after riots at the Capitol two weeks before Joe Biden’s inauguration cost almost half a billion dollars, according to two officials familiar with the situation.

Approximately 25,000 National Guard from across the country were sent to Washington after the Jan. 6 violence at the Capitol, which led to at least five deaths and briefly interrupted congressional efforts to certify President Joe Biden’s victory.

The cost of that deployment — to be detailed soon by Army officials — was at least $480 million, according to the people, who asked not to be identified since the information isn’t yet public.

Rights groups call for boycott of 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, citing worsening abuses

China’s worsening rights record in Tibet, Xinjiang, and Hong Kong has disqualified Beijing from hosting the 2022 Winter Olympics, more than 180 rights groups and activists said in a letter sent to the International Olympic Committee this week.
