I wonder if one aspect of it relates to whether there is a relationship with God. Having the spiritual calm and reassurance that you are covered, no matter what. Maybe it gives a mental freedom that would otherwise be lacking? Also in the age we live in, a protective force field against the static of other messages competing for metal head space.
TERROR
Notice how that imprecise word is being used against us now. "Terrorism", the act of inciting Terror. Terror: a feeling. The congresssman can claim they were 'terrorized', even though nothing about what happened was life threatening.
