Super Bowl ratings delay has many expecting heavy viewer decline

Usually by this point on the Monday after the Super Bowl, we'd have had at least preliminary ratings numbers in hand, giving us an idea of exactly how many viewers (close to 100M) watched the biggest television event of the year.

But Nielsen has indicated that there won't be figures until tomorrow morning. And that has many industry observers thinking the outcome for the NFL and CBS (VIAC, VIACA) could be even darker than feared.

After a couple of years of viewer declines, last year's Super Bowl on Fox (FOX, FOXA) reversed that trend, rising to 100.45M TV viewers. Streaming viewers added another 3.4M, and out-of-home viewers - in locales such as bars and restaurants - made up another 13M.

But many observers expected another decline this year; Sports Business Journal's John Ourand said the TV total would be closer to 95M. But with no news coming from Nielsen and ViacomCBS, could it be worse than that?
