My take is
they started impeachment proceedings early to remove Trump quickly before he wins his second term.
This points to the fact that they
a) expected trump to win
b) expected trump to fuck them over after his win
This is masterful. Always ten steps ahead.
By not taking the election immediately he forced them to go through with this complete joke. The other choice they had was to back out, which would be even worse.
They are expending lots of ammunition here, and the potential winnings are very small in comparison.
Trump has very little to lose here.
