To answer your original question, he is still alive (loosely) for 2 reasons, which explains better.
1.) He was smart enough to keep counter-blackmail on them, and is still not saying certain things or naming names to help keep himself safe.
2.) They tortured him and did technically kill him when he left. Doctors brought him back to life. He had organ failure and more.
He explains both better than I just did.
