Theoretically could be weeks…but I doubt it.

Today was purely about voting whether or not senate had jurisdiction to impeach private citizen Trump.

-Next phase is for each side to file any motions necessary for each side to present their case (except those relating subpoenaing witness/docs – that comes later). Motions are due 9am tomorrow, responses due by11, and arguments for those motions start at noon.

Once that’s done, each side has up to 16 hours to present case, then senate has 4 hours total to ask questions.

Next, the interesting part happens. Senate will spend 2 hours arguing then voting whether or not any evidence (witnesses/docs) can be subpoenaed.

If they vote to allow, there’s a bunch more rules which essentially say that the Senate by majority vote has the power to allow or prohibit any witnesses/documents – essentially cherry pick which evidence is actually admitted ON A CASE BY CASE BASIS. More obscene yet, the Senate gets a chance to hear each witness/read each document and then decide – by simple majority vote - if they want to admit it into evidence. In the most extreme case, the Senate could give the dems carte blanche to present whatever the hell they wanted and deny DJT the ability to present anything even as a rebuttal witness.

Once all the allowed witnesses/docs are presented, they have the final impeachment vote.

Its a fuck fuck circus by design.

i agree with you…they don't want this dragging out too long.

here's the thing…if the senate allows evidence, they don't really have control over how long the trial lasts (my opinion). See pic. Witnesses have to be deposed and documents have to go through discovery from BOTH SIDES (will these be publicly aired? no idea).

Dems run a huge risk if they don't allow evidence…maybe a bigger risk if they do. Even if they deny everything for DJT, they would still have to debate each one DJT throws up. Yes - they could summarily dismiss each one immediately, but that's also a risk.

They're running on a razor blade. If they fall with one foot on each side, it's going to be bloody.

I still think this is a movie.
