B-1B Makes First US Bomber Visit to India Since 1945

A B-1B bomber from Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D., flew over the 13th edition of the Aero India trade show at Bengaluru on Feb. 3, escorted by an Indian Air Force Tejas fighter. The bomber landed and went on static display, marking the first time a U.S. bomber has landed in India since 1945.

The B-1B was joined by a C-5M Super Galaxy on the tarmac. The visit was meant to highlight growing ties between the U.S. and India.

“India plays a key role in the Indo-Pacific region, and our cooperation advances our shared vision of a rules-based international order that promotes the prosperity and security of all countries,” U.S. Charge d’Affaires Don Heflin, head of the U.S. delegation, said at an Aero India press conference Feb. 2.

Besides showing the U.S. flag and underscoring the strategic cooperation between the two countries, the B-1B visit was an exercise of the Bomber Task Force concept, said 8th Air Force commander Maj. Gen. Mark E. Weatherington, one of the members of the delegation, in an 8th AF press release. “Our presence and engagement today is one of great historical significance we hope to build on in the years ahead,” he said. The B-1 joint flyover demonstrates “the strength of our partnership and our shared commitment to global security.”

Aircraft carriers USS Nimitz and USS Theodore Roosevelt train together in South China Sea

The aircraft carriers USS Nimitz and USS Theodore Roosevelt and their strike groups met in the contentious South China Sea for joint operations on Tuesday, according to a Navy statement.

“The ships and aircraft of the two strike groups coordinated operations in a highly trafficked area to demonstrate the U.S. Navy's ability to operate in challenging environments,” the statement said.

Two-carrier exercises are relatively rare, though they have seen a recent uptick in frequency. As of Tuesday, just nine have taken place in the Indo-Pacific region since 2001 — four since June.

The Navy last conducted dual carrier operations in the South China Sea in July, when the Nimitz and USS Ronald Reagan operated together twice.

Marines Considering 3 Littoral Regiments for the Indo-Pacific

As the Marine Corps reorganizes to prepare for a potential conflict with China, the service is considering three new Marine Littoral Regiments for its campaign of land warfare in the Indo-Pacific.

The service is shedding its heavier equipment so it can operate between expeditionary bases on islands in the Pacific to support the fleet. Part of the force design initiative is standing up a new unit, known as a Marine Littoral Regiment, which will likely have 1,800 to 2,000 sailors and Marines. The unit will feature a Littoral Combat Team, a Littoral Anti-Air Battalion and a Littoral Logistics Battalion, USNI News previously reported.

Brig. Gen. Benjamin Watson, the commanding general of the Marine Corps Warfighting Lab, recently said the service plans to have the first regiment, which will be based in Hawaii, reach initial operational capability in Fiscal Year 2023.

National Guard to conduct DC mission through mid-March; costs to reach nearly $500 million

WASHINGTON — The cost of having National Guard troops protect the area around the U.S. Capitol will cost nearly $500 million, the Pentagon's chief spokesman said Monday.

Pentagon officials estimate the Guard mission in Washington through March 15 supporting federal agencies protecting the Capitol building will cost $483 million, John Kirby told reporters.

Of that, $284 million will cover personnel costs and $199 million will cover operations costs, Kirby said. The Army National Guard's personnel costs are projected to be $256 million and $165 million for operations. For the Air National Guard, the estimate is $28 million will be spent for personnel costs and $34 million for operational costs.

Secret Service Agents Reportedly Took Selfies with Donald Trump's Sleeping Grandson

Two Secret Service Agents assigned to protect President Donald Trump's 8-year-old grandson, Donald Trump III, took selfies with the boy while he was sleeping last weekend, according to Mother Jones.

The agents were driving him from Westchester County, New York, where the Trumps own property, to Manhattan, and began snapping photos while he was still asleep. When the boy woke up, he "freaked out," a source told the outlet.

When he got home, he told his mother, Vanessa Trump, about the incident. And Vanessa then relayed it to her husband, Donald Trump Jr., who reported it. The two agents were ordered to report to the Secret Service Office of Professional Responsibility, according to the outlet.

In figures released Tuesday morning by CBS Sports, the big game had a total audience of 96.4 million viewers on CBS and a bundle of platforms and outlets, according to Nielsen. Confirming suspicions that many had even going into the matchup between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Kansas City Chiefs, that is the least-watched Super Bowl in recent history.

With around 91.6 million viewers on CBS alone, the 2021 Super Bowl is still the most watched show of the past year. However, taking an 8% stumble from what Fox had on its broadcast network last year, the 55th Super Bowl distinctly had the smallest network audience since the very different TV era of 2006.

A congressional oversight committee is investigating whether Parler has financial ties to Russian entities, citing reports that the right-wing social network "allowed Russian disinformation to flourish" before the election and hosted calls for violence before a Trump-incited mob stormed the Capitol on January 6. The committee's chairwoman sent a letter to Parler COO Jeffrey Wernick today, demanding documents on Parler's ownership, potential ties to Russian individuals or entities, and reported negotiations between Parler and the Trump Organization.

"Parler reportedly allowed Russian disinformation to flourish on its platform prior to the November 2020 election, facilitating Russia's campaign to sow chaos in the American electorate," US Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), chairwoman of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, wrote in the letter to Wernick. "Although similar disinformation was removed by other social media platforms, it was allowed to remain on Parler. When US hosting services cut ties with Parler for repeatedly failing to moderate content advocating violence, Parler re-emerged on a Russian hosting service, DDos-Guard, which has ties to the Russian government and counts the Russian Ministry of Defense as one of its clients."

'Oath Keeper' accused of leading Capitol rioters is a former FBI section chief who had top-secret security clearance, lawyer says

Retired Navy officer Kenneth Caldwell, who's accused of leading Oath Keepers militia members in last month's US Capitol riot, formerly held a top-secret security clearance as an FBI section chief and consultant, his lawyer said.

"He has been vetted and found numerous times as a person worthy of trust and confidence of the United States government, as indicated by granting him top-secret clearance," lawyer Thomas Plofchan said Monday in a court filing.

The 66-year-old Caldwell worked as an FBI section chief from 2009 to 2010, after retiring from the Navy as a lieutenant commander, and did classified consulting work for the federal government, according to the filing. Caldwell has denied being a member of Oath Keepers, and Plofchan said he has disabling injuries to his back, shoulder and knees that would have made it impossible for him to storm the Capitol on January 6.
