Tricking people doesn't take intelligence, it just takes a lack of morality. Take away all your inhibitions and you can easily trick people. All you have to do is tell them what they want to hear. I never felt good about being promiscuous throughout life. I didn't feel smart because I had tricked girls into sleeping with me, I felt dirty and disgusting but was satisfying a selfish desire. I'm not smart for being a good liar, I'm smart for recognizing that my actions were harmful to others and the net outcome was detrimental overall.
Fraud and deception are counter-intuitive. They achieve exactly the opposite of what the fraudster/deceiver hope to achieve. In my example, what I wanted was love and acceptance but what I got was the opposite.
No, they're not smart for fooling good people who only wanted to stop the rape and abuse of children. They're despicable and I could think of no worse a fate than to be sentenced to live a life as them.

People need to understand that you can only be responsible for your own actions and the excuse, "What possible good could I make" is ignoring the obligation to act as you would in example to others.
