White House Reassures Gun Control Groups It Will Fulfill ‘Ambitious’ Gun Control Agenda

With control of the House, Senate, and White House as a backdrop, Biden administration officials in their meeting with gun control advocates conveyed confidence about enacting gun control legislation through legislative and executive actions that in the past had not gotten the votes.

On Wednesday, Domestic Policy Advisor Susan Rice and White House Public Engagement Director and Senior Advisor Cedric Richmond held a virtual meeting with leaders of gun control groups, including Gifford’s Everytown for Gun Safety, Moms Demand Action, and Brady, during which they discussed gun violence in America.

Rice and Richmond told attendees that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are ready to act to reduce gun violence and enact “common sense” gun laws.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters on Thursday that the Biden Administration is moving forward with fulfilling its “ambitious plan” of increasing gun control in the near future.

“During the campaign, President Biden laid out an ambitious plan to make our community safer. And that’s why in part, yesterday, senior members of his team … hosted a virtual discussion with leaders of gun violence prevention groups to discuss our shared goals,” said Psaki.

“We look forward to working with gun violence survivors and advocates and sharing more in the weeks and months ahead about our efforts to make our communities safer,” she added.

The main part of Biden’s gun control agenda includes banning the manufacture and sale of “assault weapons” and high-capacity magazines, regulating possession of existing assault weapons under the National Firearms Act, buying back these weapons and high-capacity magazines from citizens, requiring background checks for all gun sales, ending the online sale of firearms and ammunition, and providing more funds to enforce these laws.

The gun control groups who were in attendance at Wednesday’s meeting shared their optimism about getting gun control laws in place that had previously been blocked by the GOP majority in the Senate.

“This meeting provided more evidence that the Biden Administration is committed to being the strongest we’ve ever seen on gun safety,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, said in a joint press release.

Among the topics discussed at Wednesday’s meeting were steps that can be taken to close background check loopholes, stopping the sales of unregulated and untraceable “ghost” guns, and expanding violence intervention programs.

Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action, said she is confident that the public will see gun control executive and legislative action in the near future.

“In 2013, after gun safety stalled in the Senate, President Biden stood by former Congresswoman Giffords and vowed to fight the gun lobby and that the time would come for change. That moment has arrived,” said Peter Ambler, executive director of Giffords.org, referring to former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.).

Giffords is a gun control group founded by former Congresswoman Giffords, who was shot in the head by a gunman in 2011 at a “Congress On Your Corner” constituent event in Tucson, and where six people were killed and 12 were injured.

In addition, Kris Brown, the president of Brady, praised the Biden Administration’s willingness to take “decisive action” against gun violence.

“They know that this is a public health threat and that there isn’t a moment to waste. This administration is prepared to take a whole-of-government approach to keep Americans safe and Brady looks forward to working with them to do so,” said Brown in a Thursday press statement.

The Brady organization was named after Jim Brady, former press secretary for Ronald Reagan who in 1981 became permanently disabled from a gunshot wound during the attempted assassination of the Republican president.

Meanwhile, gun rights groups are encouraging members to demand that their state and federal lawmakers advocate for gun owners by protecting the Second Amendment. Colorado’s Rally for Your Rights members are gearing up to fight local and federal legislation that infringes on their Second Amendment rights to own a gun for self-defense.

The National Rifle Association (NRA), has urged members “to make their voices heard in opposition to any infringement upon their constitutional rights.”

The 117th U.S. Congress has filed a half dozen gun control measures with the House Judiciary Committee and includes Rep. Bobby Rush’s (D-Ill.) H.R.30, which would punish and deter firearms trafficking and Rep. Al Green’s (D-Texas) H.R.167, which would prohibit the transfer of a firearm at a gun show by a person who is not a federally licensed firearms dealer.

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) has filed four gun control bills including H.R.127, which would require the licensing of firearm and ammunition possession and the registration of firearms and to prohibit the possession of certain ammunition.

Gun rights groups have called H.R. 127 “The Gun Apocalypse” because the bill would require expensive psychological evaluations for multiple family members before being able to purchase a gun.

“Biden wants to ban our semi-auto rifles, tax our guns/mags & more. He knows the only thing standing in his way to DISMANTLE THE 2ND AMENDMENT is NRA. Gun owners must stay vigilant & be engaged in elections and the legislative process,” The NRA told its members.

Biden Energy Policies Heading America Toward a ‘Full-Fledged Recession,’ Oklahoma’s Rep. Mullin Warns

President Joe Biden’s recent energy policy decisions to stop Keystone XL pipeline construction and halt oil and gas industry drilling on federal lands will put America’s economy into “a full-fledged recession,” according to Rep. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.).

“Absolutely, there is no doubt with the devastating executive orders that are coming out of the Biden administration and what you are seeing Democrats do in the House and what they are going to try to do in the Senate, it is costing thousands of jobs,” Mullin told The Epoch Times Friday.

“We’ve already realized that the Keystone pipeline itself will, directly and indirectly, affect 10,000 jobs, that’s crazy,” Mullin said. “Then you start seeing the moratorium that they are putting on public land, on off-shore drilling and the leases through the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the list just goes on and on and on.”

Mullin was referring to a Jan. 20 Executive Order signed by Biden that effectively stopped new oil and gas drilling and leasing on federal lands and in off-shore areas, pending a government-wide review of the impact of all federal policies on climate change, or global warming.

He was also referring to Biden’s declaration that he will actively push federal policies aimed at ultimately ending America’s use of fossil fuels and converting the nation to electricity generated by solar and wind resources.

“When they are talking about eliminating fossil fuels altogether, you’re talking about power-plants now, you’re talking about manufacturing jobs now because, and this is something they don’t think about, if you eliminate fossil fuels out of the energy, you don’t have the power plants there to take the load, supply and demand becomes an issue and you are going to see energy prices that will be higher than they already are in California,” Mullin said.

“Manufacturers can’t stay open at that pace, they’re going to end up leaving and going to someplace else, to another country, so you’re not going to have just the oil and gas industry that will be affected, but you will have manufacturing jobs. It’s going to put us in a full-fledged recession,” he continued.

Mullin’s comments came in the wake of the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Feb. 11 rejection on a party-line 31-26 vote of an amendment Mullin proposed that would have re-directed $2.7 billion to mental health services targeted to energy industry workers who lose their jobs.

Debate on the Mullin amendment came during the committee’s “markup” of its portion of Biden’s proposed $1.9 trillion package of relief measures related to the CCP Virus that is also known as the novel coronavirus. Each of the major House committees are in the process of marking-up their portions of the overall package.

Mullin said he offered the amendment because Biden’s policies are permanently killing jobs, which will have a devastating psychological effect on suddenly unemployed workers, including rising suicide rates.

“If we don’t address that issue, then we’re going to have serious problems on our hands,” Mullin told The Epoch Times.

Democrats on the committee, however, accused Republicans of ignoring the seriousness of climate change during the debate on Mullin’s amendment.

“It’s hard to take some of my colleagues seriously when they are not relying on the science and on the facts,” Rep. Nannette Diaz Barragan (D-Calif.).

“This has turned into a climate discussion rather than a mental health discussion, so I would invite those here who don’t want to rely on science to come to my congressional district and congressional districts across the country where you have drilling in backyards, so you can see what it’s doing to communities, how it’s killing communities with air pollution and lung cancer.”

Barragan claimed that the CCP Virus hits people with “respiratory problems, from the drilling, from the fossil-fuel activities that they have experienced in their backyards.”

Barragan was not challenged to provide examples of individuals who claimed to have contacted the virus as a result of being exposed in their backyards to oil and gas drilling activities.

One Democrat on the panel, Rep. Lizzie Fletcher of Texas, expressed support for Mullin’s desire to provide targeted mental health services, but she said she voted against his amendment because, by increasing the $1.75 billion authorized for such mental health services to $2.75 billion, the proposal would have violated congressional reconciliation rules.

Asked by The Epoch Times what reactions he gets when he points out to Democratic colleagues the vast number of everyday products used by Americans that are petroleum derivatives, Mullin said he often cites micro-fibers.

“Take eco-friendly clothing, that’s become a big thing and so much of the micro-fibers are made out of plastic. Every fleece that is out there is made out of plastic, so I think they understand it, they just can’t explain it. Explaining the end of the world is actually easier than explaining how dependent we are on fossil fuels,” Mullin said.
