Trudeau's blunt remark on Trump's role in Capitol riots introduced at impeachment trial

On Jan. 8, Trudeau bucked diplomatic niceties and pointedly criticized his counterpart to the south

On Jan. 8, Trudeau bucked tradition and pointedly criticized his counterpart to the south, saying political leadersโ€™ choice of words have a direct impact on individualsโ€™ behaviour and institutions, and that everyone heard what the president said before the โ€œhorrificโ€ events unfolded.

โ€œWhat we witnessed was an assault on democracy by violent rioters, incited by the current president and other politicians,โ€ Trudeau said in public comments.

โ€œAs shocking, deeply disturbing, and frankly saddening, as that event remains, we have also seen this week that democracy is resilient in America, our closest ally and neighbour. Violence has no place in our societies, and extremists will not succeed in overruling the will of the people.โ€

Trudeau's criticism of Trump cited at U.S. impeachment trial

Castro continued by quoting Trudeau:

"What we witnessed was an assault on democracy by violent rioters, incited by the current president and other politicians," Trudeau said last month during an address outside his residence at Rideau Cottage.

"As shocking, deeply disturbing, and frankly saddening, as that event remains, we have also seen this week that democracy is resilient in America, our closest ally and neighbour. Violence has no place in our societies, and extremists will not succeed in overruling the will of the people."

What's next

Castro pleaded with senators to convict the president to send a message to other countries, that the U.S. remains a driving force for democratic government.

"The world is watching, and wondering, whether we are who we say we are."

Former Lincoln Project Workers Ask to Be Released From Nondisclosure Agreements

Leaders of the anti-Trump group came under fire from former workers who want to talk about John Weaver, a co-founder who harassed young men.

Leaders of the Lincoln Project, the anti-Trump media venture, came under fire on Thursday night from six former workers demanding to be released from nondisclosure agreements in order to talk about John Weaver, a co-founder who harassed young men online.

. . . .The six former employees and associates called on the Lincoln Project to waive nondisclosure agreements, writing in an open letter โ€” which was provided to The New York Times โ€” that they wanted to be allowed to disclose information โ€œthat would aid the press, public and our donors in answering questions relevant to the public interest.โ€

Third person charged with alleged involvement in Qld sex slave ring

A Queensland woman has been charged over her alleged involvement in an alleged sexual slavery ring uncovered in Brisbane last week.

Hannah Christina Stead, 23, appeared in Brisbane Arrests Court on Friday after being charged with conducting a business involving servitude and unlawful prostitution.

She is the third person to be charged over the alleged sexual slavery ring following the arrest of Matthew James Markcrow and Crystal Marie Sawyer last week.

Police allege several women aged between 17 and 24 were subjected to sexual servitude, plied with stupefying drugs and subjected to controlled living, financial and work conditions.

Chillingly, the women were allegedly branded with tattoos and filmed without their consent.

Court documents allege Ms Stead, from Fairfield, carried on the business of unlawful prostitution between March 2019 and November last year.

She is alleged to have conducted a business involving servitude between March 2019 and August last year with a person under the age of 18 โ€“ an offence contrary to the Commonwealth Criminal Code.

Her case was adjourned to February 24 following her brief appearance in court on Friday.

As part of her bail conditions, she cannot approach Mr Markcrow, Ms Sawyer or five other women and must report to police once a week.

Mr Markcrow is facing 10 charges, including conducting unlawful prostitution, making recordings in breach of privacy and three counts of contravening an order about electronic information.

Photos shared on his Facebook page depict tattoos reading โ€œProperty of Matty Mโ€.

Ms Sawyer, his partner, is facing two counts of contravening an order about electronic information and one count of conducting unlawful prostitution.

Ms Sawyer was last week granted bail despite police concerns she would run the alleged operation in Mr Markcrowโ€™s absence.

Both will return to court on February 24.
