Bought Pillars of Eternity on a whim while it was on sale on Steam along with all the DLC. I know nothing about it but I'm a big fan of CRPG's.

I thought it was fantastic, and I loved Deadfire EXCEPT for the ship travel and naval combat (which Josh didn't even want in the game).
You will enjoy it if you want autistic world-building, a unique setting (it's basically Colonial America, in FantasyWorld), and the ability to align with a bunch of different factions in true Obsidian fashion. It also has a really interesting take on AD&D rules. Basically, Josh and the designers copy-pasted AD&D 2.5 edition, removed THAC0, and made a bunch of other refinements. It's basically a more polished version of Baldurs Gate in that regard.
HOWEVER, do not expect a gripping story laced with human drama. I mean, I liked the plot. I have zero complaints myself, but it's honestly presented in an extraordinarily bland manner. I can't deny it. The plot is presented so bland that I can't argue with people who lose interest.
Oh, and if you have an IQ of 75 or above, it will occur to you that you don't need to read all the backstories of the gold-colored NPCs who stand there with no dialogue. They are obviously KickStarter backers, and their "soul bios" have nothing to do with the plot and aren't canon.
and to add, i don't see any reason why it shuold be EPIC store exclusive, i mean, pic related exist too.
Every Dragon Quest game until VIII had a narrative innovation in one way or another or tried to be unique or different in the way it tells its story, and the way it's lambasted for being simple or that "no one cares about the story in DQ" is idiotic. Even people who play the games and say they don't care probably don't realize how much it does end up mattering.
DQ1: First true JRPG. Self-explanatory. Practically invented the typical way that NPCs are written in RPGs: Make the world feel alive by spreading information around the NPCs, so that talking to all of them matters. Make NPC stories interconnect between towns and make them occassionally interact with each other. Make NPCs comment on each other. Tremendous innovation in general, just need to compare it to Zelda 2's NPCs.
DQ2: Party members. Self-explanatory.
DQ3: An, at the time, absolutely insane twist towards the end that changes everything. Refines the NPCs from DQ1 into the form that is now classic for DQ - use them not only to give hints, but also tell the location's story by splitting it up between the NPCs.
DQ4: Fleshed out party members, chapter system to give them all their spotlight
DQ5: The most insane innovation of them all. Probably the first game that focuses on "ludonarrative consistency". Make the player feel the story though the gameplay. Essentially, the theme is that your family's life and achivements can justify a life of struggle, and the game makes you feel the struggle through gameplay as well as the payoff of the family
DQ6: Ideal self vs actual self. Meeting the real hero as dream hero was pretty unique and interesting
DQ7: Bildungsroman in video game form. Every side-story teaches MC a story about life, you usually have "adult" bittersweet outcomes. Other NPCs go through a similar process of growth. Constant reminder that MC is changing over the course of the game.
From DQ9 on, there isn't much unique, except DQ11's act 3

The PSX "trilogy" of FFs were the gold standard for JRPG quality back in the day. Will we ever see that kind of incredible dedication from any developer again, let alone Square?

are there any good new waifus from the last decade?
I like the Sorceress from Dragon Crown for example but I think she lacks soul compared to say old capcom fightan waifus, modern waifus look a bit too much like hentai fanservice imho I'm happy to be proven wrong
