My colleague Tim Morris reports that at Wednesday afternoon's town hall meeting hosted by Sen. Bill Cassidy that the first-term Republican denied an aggrieved constituent's complaint that his campaign had received $70,000 in contributions from new Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.

Cassidy told the crowd that it would have been illegal for him to receive that much from DeVos.

Cassidy was technically telling the truth, but he wasn't being completely honest. According to reporting from the Center for Responsive Politics, Betsy DeVos made three contributions of $2,600 each to Bill Cassidy's 2014 senate campaign. That's a total of $7,800. The contributions were made June 26, 2014, September 25, 2014, and November 11, 2014.

But in that same election year, Dan DeVos made three contributions of $2,600 each. That's a total of $7,800. The contributions were made June 26, 2014, September 25, 2014, and November 11, 2014.

Dick DeVos Jr. made three contributions of $2,600 each to Bill Cassidy's 2014 senate campaign. That's a total of $7,800. The contributions were made June 26, 2014, September 25, 2014, and November 11, 2014.

Doug DeVos made made three contributions of $2,600 each to Bill Cassidy's 2014 senate campaign. That's a total of $7,800. The contributions were made June 26, 2014, September 25, 2014, and November 11, 2014.

Helen DeVos made three contributions of $2,600 each to Bill Cassidy's 2014 senate campaign. That's a total of $7,800. The contributions were made June 26, 2014, September 25, 2014 and November 11, 2014.

Maria DeVos made three contributions of $2,600 each to Bill Cassidy's 2014 senate campaign. That's a total of $7,800. The contributions were made June 26, 2014, September 25, 2014 and November 11, 2014.

Pam DeVos made three contributions of $2,600 each to Bill Cassidy's 2014 senate campaign. That's a total of $7,800. The contributions were made June 26, 2014, September 25, 2014, and November 11, 2014.

Richard "Rich" DeVos Sr. made three contributions of $2,600 each to Bill Cassidy's 2014 senate campaign. That's a total of $7,800. The contributions were made June 26, 2014, September 25, 2014 and November 11, 2014.

And Cheri DeVos made three contributions of $2,600 each to Bill Cassidy's 2014 senate campaign. That's a total of $7,800. The contributions were made June 26, 2014, September 25, 2014, and November 11, 2014.

Put Betsy's and Dan's and Dick's and Doug's and Helen's and Maria's and Pam's and Richard's and Cheri's contributions all together and what do you get? $70,200.

In denying a $70,000 contribution from Betsy DeVos, Cassidy was responding to a constituent holding a sign saying that Cassidy had been bought and paid for by the new education secretary.

That's actually unfair. If Betsy DeVos bought Cassidy, she wasn't alone. Eight other DeVoses chipped in.

Bill Cassidy wasn't bought by Betsy DeVos; he was bought by the DeVos family
