Have you ever been hungry? I mean, REALLY hungry? I got in a fix a long time ago and lost ~60# in about as many days. I was limping along on whatever food I could steal - which wasn't a helluva lot - and whatever I could buy with redeemed cans and bottles dug out of the snow. I'm not being maudlin or overly dramatic … it was winter in Michigan. That's where and when I happened to be at the time.
Because I had a good job to go back to (in theory) and was a white male (with custody … back when men NEVER got custody), the so-called "social networks" weren't available to me. Being laid off from Conrail meant that the only local factory (which DID have an open position for a hi-lo driver) wouldn't even give me an application. Being trapped out in the boonies with a mostly-dead car didn't help, either.
But I don't think I've ever been THIS hungry:
Tonight I watched an opossum, soaking wet in the freezing rain, steal a bag of shit mixed with kitty litter. That he wasn't eating it right there hints that he was maybe taking it home to the kids.
Now THAT is hungry.
