For some reason, Q's Apple's 'spaceship' campus picture think of Druid. I don't know why. (https://www.cnn.com/2013/11/19/tech/innovation/apple-spaceship-campus/index.html)

Witches Of The Craft® "Witchcraft for the 21st Century"

Druids and Sacrifice

There are no authenticated evidences of Druid sacrifice beyond about the first century CE, while the tenet of ‘harm none’ is usually accepted as dating from the late 19th – early 20th centuries (generally attributed to Gerald Gardener, Doreen Valiente, or Aleister Crowley). Today, our sacrifices are herbs, incense, flowers, oils – all wonderfully acceptable to the Gods.

What we must not do, however, is try to claim ancient unbroken lineage for something we made up yesterday (this has caused some authors no end of trouble in the past!). An ancient source does not make something more authentic. Although there are those who still insist that the only correct way is the most ancient one possible: intact, with no changes; if it comes from the heart, the Gods know.

By 1969 Druids were starting to feature in the burgeoning counter-culture. <<John Lennon>consciously or intuitively knew that Peace and Love, the cornerstones of counter-cultural idealism, were deeply connected with Druidism, and so he sang about this in his 'Mind-Games':

We're playing those mind games together,

Pushing the barrier, planting seeds.

Playing the mind guerrilla,

Chanting the Mantra, 'Peace on Earth'.

We all been playing those mind games forever

Some kinda druid dudes lifting the veil.

Doing the mind guerrilla,

Some call it magic - the search for the grail.

<<“Samhain is Halloween;>Halloween is Samhain,” said Ellen Evert Hopman, 61, an author, herbalist and Druid priestess and scholar. Irish monks, by most accounts, co-opted the earthy ritual and recast it with strait-laced saints. But the bones of the holiday wouldn’t stay buried.

The first historical record of Samhain, an engraved bronze calendar found in Coligny, France, dates to the first century B.C. The Druids of the British Isles went to ground a few centuries later, after the Romans rode in on chariots and “trashed the place,” Ms. Hopman said. All the same, she said: “There have been people celebrating Samhain in Europe for thousands of years. It never ended. Now it’s coming back with a vengeance, as more and more people turn back to the old ways to honor the Earth.”

Samhain is probably the most popular of the eight annual Druid festivals, said Taryn Lyon, 27, the grove’s “scribe” and a member of the witan, or vestry. “Just like there are Christmas Christians, there are Samhain Druids and pagans,” she said.

These days,<< Samhain (pronounced SOW-in) lasts from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2.>The old Celtic calendar seemingly cleaved the year into two seasons, the dark half and the light. This was a harvest festival, then, and perhaps a New Year’s revel as well.
