This is how it was explained to me quite awhile back, when we were still on 8Chan and for awhile had to solve the Captcha every frigging time we posted (so annoying!): When shill attacks were larger, they made Captcha harder to solve to defeat shillbots' algorithms. I learned to just put in one letter, and attempt to solve Captcha, whenever it looked like a cluster fuck. Wash, rinse, repeat until you get an obvious one.
