No Kneeling: Scotland and Wales Players All Remain Standing Before Rugby Game

Players for Scotland and Wales all remained standing ahead of their Six Nations rugby match on Saturday, defying uproar over many players not kneeling to Black Lives Matter at the earlier Scotland vs England fixture.

While players for England — with some notable exceptions — decided to “take a knee” for Black Lives Matter before facing off against the Scots team in their home stadium, only a handful of Scottish players followed suit.

The Scots went on to heft the Calcutta Cup after soundly defeating the English team — their first win over their much larger neighbour on English soil since 1983 — but the fact they had largely shunned the kneeling to BLM which has become ritual in many sports, and in particular football, before the game triggered a woke backlash.

“#AsOne is the message from Scottish Rugby. But the players don’t seem to be ‘as one’ in their stance against racism,” sniped Sky Sports News editor Anthony Joseph.

“It’s less about ‘they should kneel’ and more about ‘why wouldn’t they?’” he added, despite the fact that athletes’ decision to knee — or not — is supposed to be a personal one, and a subject for interrogation.

Rather than buckle under the pressure, however, the Scots’ stance on kneeling appears to have hardened following the outcry, with none of the players for their team or the Welsh national team kneeling ahead of their own Six Nations clash.

Placer Co. students appear to host large unsanctioned prom violating public health guidelines

PLACER COUNTY, Calif. —

Placer Union High School District officials responded to KCRA 3 on Saturday about a recent student-parent organized event appearing to break county and state public health guidelines.

A video obtained by KCRA 3 shows a large gathering of students singing and dancing to loud music, wearing no masks and not social distancing. A caption on the video reads, "F**** COVID." The source who shared the video says it was taken at a prom event organized by some students at Del Oro High School.

District officials acknowledged that parents were also involved in the planning of the prom, which is marketed as a "peaceful protest" on their Instagram page.

"This is not something the school or the school district supported or organized or sponsored," said Jeffrey Tooker, deputy superintendent of the Placer Union High School District. "I understand why parents want to try and organize events like this. Unfortunately what ends up happening and what’s happened here from what I understand, is it creates anxiety for students and adults."

Tooker added concerns include worries that students who did attend the Feb. 6 event could put those who did not at risk of being exposed to COVID-19.

"Teachers [feel] the same anxiety," said Tooker. "People are trying to do the right thing and other people get caught in the middle, [including] site administration, district officials and the student body."

On social media, a post promoting the event said that attendees can expect temperature checks and breathalyzers at the door, and that everyone participating must bring a COVID-19 waiver. There is no mention of face mask requirements or social distancing.

"We don't have control of what people do outside of the school day, but certainly we want everyone to think about what you're doing on your personal time, [and] the potential impacts it has at school or the workplace," added Tooker.

Social media posts stated that Saturday's "peaceful protest" was supposed to happen at the Gold Country Fairgrounds, but the location appears to have been changed the day before.

"People are living with heightened anxiety right now and we wanna do what's best for kids," said Tooker, "and that's a delicate balance at the moment."
