Asked a couple of times in last bread - Why didn't the Vegas shooter's laptop have a hard drive. A computer does not need a HDD/SSD to run. It can run on a USB thumbdrive or external HDD/SSD drive. One advantage is you can flush a thumb drive down the toilet. Another advantage is you can use a Linux distro to create a Live USB drive that's non-persistent such TAILS (which is a security oriented distro using Tor). However, there's no such thing as safe on the web. One should assume one is being watched by someone, somewhere and whatever you do or say never goes away and behave accordingly. OS and hw/sw combinations have no guarantee's. IT security is a process and an attitude, not a product or service. btw Windows has a backdoor (and numerous vulnerabilities) for the C_A to use (put there by MS which is part of PRISM as Apple is as well). Kaspersky discovered it and then blocked it which why our gov't had a shit fit and banned it within days. Linux/BSD is safer but again there are no guarantee's. Just an FYI for newfags and non-techie types.
This is a good place to start - https://linuxjourney.com/ Maybe get another drive and install Fedora and learn to use the command line. Business's use RedHat (which is the consumer version of Fedora) and Suse Linux quite a bit. Obviously being proficient with Windows is helpful too, so learn to use the Windows command prompt as well. If he wants to go into IT, IT security is booming and will always be needed (like police, fire, and healthcare fields. Search on the web and check out sites like Wilders and other security forums. Ask the pro's there what would be good to learn. I'm not a pro per se. Also there are online courses for A+ and Network+ which are the bottom rungs for him to get started later when he's older. Best of luck and God Bless you and your family fellow Anon.
