He knows, WE ALL know, he's fake, and he needs to try to project some kind of "I'm the real deal" image to attempt to gaslight anyone who may be weak minded enough to be able to be gaslit.
If you think about it, it actually shows his weak minded-ness and that WE live in his head RENT FREE 24/7, and that he KNOWS that we KNOW he's not real.
