It's sad, I know. I run an electrical apprenticeship program. We try to go into the high schools and make them aware of these programs before they go into debt chasing a degree that may or may not help them.

 

The whole paradigm has to be shifted back to the days when a child has a career goal and gets the education to pursue that goal. As is stands now, the goal that is put before them is to get into college. Period.

Yes! And over the past years these "shop" programs were taken out of schools, and as a result, the trades are suffering because of lack of skilled labor.

 

Can you imagine the increase in demand for these jobs when the infrastructure plans kick in? Small town schools are more aware, but they are struggling to find approved programs.
