I always interpret those dotted lines as places where the aircraft was out of contact. It will have 'dots' where the local ATC picked it up, making its path appear to jump unnaturally.
IMO just mentally connect the missing piece of the flight path (see yellow) to get a truer picture of where it actually flew. Some of those jags and jumps are impossible.
