Report: Chris Murphy to Put Forward Universal Gun Background Checks for Biden

In coming weeks Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) reportedly plans to put forward the universal background check legislation President Biden wants to sign.

The Hill reports Murphy reacted to Biden’s February 14, 2021, call for universal background checks by making clear he will put such legislation forward.

Murphy said:

President Biden and his administration are clearly committed to signing commonsense gun violence prevention legislation into law and taking executive action to save lives and make our communities safer. Two years ago, we got pretty darn close to striking a bipartisan deal to expand background checks that I believe would have passed on the floor if [Senate Minority Leader Mitch] McConnell put it up for a vote.

Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA) is expected to introduce similar legislation in the House, but made clear he is waiting for the most opportune time to put it forward: “The White House is definitely committed to gun violence prevention and Mike’s top priority on this issue is the Bipartisan Background Checks Act. We are still actively working with leadership and advocates on timing of that bill.”

Congress Seems Poised to Remove Aid to Veterans and Underserved Students in the COVID Relief Package

One of the immutable rules when it comes to Washington politicians addressing important policy issues, is that they consistently ignore the law of unintended consequences.

A recent example is the little noticed effort by congressional Democrats to change a key component of federal funding regulations for higher education called the “90/10 rule.”

Under the rule, proprietary colleges and universities may derive no more than 90 percent of their revenues from federal student aid programs, with 10 percent coming from non-federal funding.

Liberal activists who are determined to drive proprietary colleges out of business want to change the equation. They claim that student veterans are not benefitting from the offerings of proprietary colleges

Australian Belt and Road Deal Expected to Be Ripped up in Weeks

Beijing’s Belt and Road deal with the Australian state government of Victoria looks set to be torn up in weeks as the deadline for the states’ to inform the federal government of all foreign agreements draws nearer.

Speaking to the Herald Sun, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said he saw no benefit to Victoria’s deal with Beijing and signalled that the agreement would be unlikely to stand under the bill.

“If there are benefits, what are they and what was paid for them? I don’t have the answers to those questions at this point, but the assessment of those arrangements will continue,” Morrison said.

Under the new Foreign Relations Bill—passed on Dec. 3, 2020—state governments have until March 10 to inform the Federal government of all deals with foreign powers.

The foreign affairs minister then has the power to veto those arrangements if they are deemed not in Australia’s interests.

Democrats Are Trying to Ruin the Military

The U.S. military is the ultimate meritocracy, or at least it used to be. It didn’t used to matter what color your skin was, your rank, your job and how well you did it was all that mattered. Thanks to Democrats and their obsession with, and weaponization of, race in the country, skin color will be all that matters soon.

The U.S. Navy formed something called “Task Force One Navy” last June, as the left-wing social agenda crept even under Republican presidents. Last week, they issued their report on making the Navy more “inclusive” by treating people differently based on their skin color.

As part of their report, the Navy included something called the “TF1N Pledge.” What is in this pledge is the essence of modern progressivism and will, unless something dramatically changes and Democrats either wake the hell up and resist their radical flank or lose power, destroy the greatest military the world has ever known. (You can read the report here, the pledge is on page 10.)

DR Congo's mysterious metal monolith destroyed by mob

A metal structure that mysteriously appeared on a roundabout in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been destroyed over fears about its origins.

People in the capital, Kinshasa, stoned and torched the 12ft (3.7m) triangular prism that looked like other metal monoliths that have cropped up around the world over the last few months.

It had begun to draw selfie-takers, which fuelled rumours on social media.

Some feared it was satanic or put there by aliens or by a secret cabal.

Migrants on the move again in Mexico and Central America

TENOSIQUE, Mexico (AP) — In the first Mexican shelter reached by migrants after trekking through the Guatemalan jungle, some 150 migrants are sleeping in its dormitories and another 150 lie on thin mattresses spread across the floor of its chapel.

Only six weeks into the year, the shelter known as “The 72” has hosted nearly 1,500 migrants, compared to 3,000 all of last year. It has halved its dormitory space due to the pandemic. That wasn’t a problem last year because few migrants arrived, but this year it’s been overwhelmed.

“We have a tremendous flow and there isn’t capacity,” said Gabriel Romero, the priest who runs the shelter in Tenosique, a town in southern Tabasco state. “The situation could get out of control. We need a dialogue with all of the authorities before this becomes chaos.” In particular, he would like the government to assist with migrants who camp outside while they are full.

Inside Wikipedia's leftist bias: socialism pages whitewashed, communist atrocities buried

"The days of Wikipedia's robust commitment to neutrality are long gone," co-founder Larry Sanger said.

Big tech has faced repeated accusations of bias and censorship, but one platform has escaped much scrutiny: Wikipedia.

The online encyclopedia, which claims "anyone can edit", is the 13th most popular website in the world, according to Alexa's web rankings. Google gives it special placement in search results.

But critics – including Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger – tell Fox News that many Wikipedia pages have become merely left-wing advocacy essays.

"The days of Wikipedia's robust commitment to neutrality are long gone," co-founder Larry Sanger said.

"Wikipedia's ideological and religious bias is real and troubling, particularly in a resource that continues to be treated by many as an unbiased reference work," he added

NYPD cop-killer convicted in 1980 murder to be paroled

A convicted killer who gunned down an off-duty NYPD officer trying to stop a trio of car thieves in 1980 has been granted parole, it was revealed Thursday — leaving his family and fellow cops furious.

Police Officer Harry Ryman was killed on Aug. 14, 1980.

PBA

Paul Ford, 58, one of three men convicted in the Aug. 15, 1980, shooting death of Police Officer Harry Ryman, is scheduled to be released next month despite receiving a life sentence in the case, the Police Benevolent Association said on Twitter.

“It’s bad enough that this hero family has to live in fear of what might happen when PO Ryman’s killers hit the street,” PBA President Pat Lynch said in a statement Thursday.

“But to swallow that fear while they watch their father’s sacrifice be devalued and disrespected by the state of New York — that is cruel and unusual punishment,” Lynch said.

NJ Governor Phil Murphy, Wife’s Pro Soccer Team Cited in Federal Immigration Fraud Investigation

TRENTON, NJ – It’s no secret that New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy wants open borders, sanctuary and equal, if not more rights for illegal aliens in his state, but just how far the Governor and his wife Tammy will go to violate U.S. immigration law to provide those opportunities is now being questioned.

Update: 12/18/21 – This story has been updated to reflect statements by Governor Phil Murphy and Sky Blue FC.

The Murphys are the owners of the Sky Blue FC professional women’s soccer team and in the past have been accused of mistreatment of players. Now, they are being accused of being part of a wide-scale immigration fraud scheme by the Department of Justice. While no charges have been filed against Sky Blue or the Murphys personally, emails do suggest that Phil Murphy was aware of the contract personally. Sky Blue said it has not had a relationship with that organization since 2016.

“In 2018, Sky Blue personnel became aware of an investigation relating to Global Premier Soccer. The team has not been contacted about the investigation since then and has had no relationship with GPS since 2016,” said Brian McDonough, a spokesperson for Sky Blue.

European Exploration of Africa

Europeans have been interested in African geography since the time of the Greek and Roman Empires. Around 150 CE, Ptolemy created a map of the world that included the Nile and the great lakes of East Africa. In the Middle Ages, the large Ottoman Empire blocked European access to Africa and its trade goods, but Europeans still learned about Africa from Islamic maps and travelers, like Ibn Battuta. The Catalan Atlas, created in 1375, which includes many African coastal cities, the Nile River, and other political and geographical features, shows how much Europe knew about North and West Africa.

Texas Electric Board Members Live WHERE?

Many, probably most, Texans hadn’t heard of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas until this week. Then a historic winter storm froze up the place and “electric reliability” turned into an unfunny joke for far too many. Their electricity was reliably unavailable.

Well, except in certain well-lit urban downtowns. If you live outside of those, as most Texans do, you were forced to play a grim version of Russian Roulette with your power and water supply — if you could get either. Your water pipes may have frozen and burst, rendering your frigid home uninhabitable. I have friends who are dealing with this and will be dealing with it for a long time after the storm.

Power went out for millions of Texans several days ago and is only now being restored piecemeal. Freezing temperatures won’t even leave central Texas until Friday. Much of the state north of that may stay cold for days yet.

Texans are getting to know the 50-year-old council and are not liking what they’re learning. For one thing, about a third of its members don’t even live in Texas.

A third of the board of directors that operate the state’s electrical grid do not appear to live in Texas, and their performance in wake of widespread outages has led to a Dallas-area lawmaker’s call for change.

Records show the two top office holders of the 15-member board of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), live out-of-state. Three other ERCOT board members also appear to live thousands of miles from Texas.

The thought of some Californian voting on our energy market doesn’t sit well.

Pay up, Zuck: Canada allies with Australia in ‘battle’ against Facebook over news content

Following Australia’s lead, Canada has announced that it aims to force Facebook to pay for news content. Ottawa said it would not be intimidated if the tech giant seeks retribution.

Canadian Heritage Minister Steven Guilbeault said on Thursday that he would begin drafting legislation that could resemble Australia’s bid to make Facebook and other companies pay a licensing fee to feature domestically created content on their platforms.

“Canada is at the forefront of this battle… we are really among the first group of countries around the world that are doing this,” the minister told reporters.

He said that Ottawa was also considering a less forceful approach. France, for example, has required tech companies to enter into negotiations with publishers regarding financial compensation, without forcing the issue. Guilbeault said the government was still deciding which model would be “the most appropriate,” adding that he was in consultations with colleagues in France, Australia, Germany and Finland about how to best secure compensation from Facebook.

The minister predicted that soon more than a dozen countries could adopt rules requiring the Silicon Valley behemoth to pay for news content.

Lucasfilm president excoriated for talking of EMPOWERING WOMEN after firing Gina Carano, forcing Oscars to wipe comments

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, fresh from firing actress Gina Carano from ‘The Mandalorian’ for political incorrectness, made the ironic decision to speak about empowering women and hearing their voices. It didn't end well.

The Oscars posted the video on Tuesday, featuring Kennedy speaking about its scientific and technical awards. Kennedy, who fired Carano last week over “abhorrent and unacceptable” social media posts, said in the video that “women are helping to redefine science and technology in the movies, and that means a brave, bold future without limits for each and every storyteller.”

Star Wars’ fans responded with disgust, ripping Kennedy for her hypocrisy. The social-media beating was so severe – with dislikes outnumbering likes by 10,000 to 101 and more than 6,000 almost entirely negative comments being posted – that the Oscars disabled all reactions to the video.

BREAKING: Kathleen Kennedy and The Oscars have just disabled and erased over 6,000 comments that were posted as a response to her highly unpopular Fake Feminist YouTube video. How long before they also make those 10,000 dislikes disappear? pic.twitter.com/kcGJNdfCRG
