Jim McIngvale, owner of Gallery Furniture in Texas, said Wednesday that he decided to use two of his stores as warming centers, providing food, hot drinks, blankets, and warm clothing to the community.
“A lot of people are without power. Come see us until the power gets back on,” McIngvale told told KPRC.
The extreme weather has been blamed for the deaths of at least 40 people as of Thursday, some while trying to keep warm during record freezing weather in America’s central and southern states, triggered by a sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) event that began disrupting the Arctic polar vortex on Jan. 5.
This isn’t the first time McIngvale has converted some of his stores into warming centers during times of need.
In September 2019, he turned his mattress showroom into a temporary shelter during Tropical Storm Imelda. Before that, he made headlines when he did the same for Texans left homeless by Hurricane Harvey in 2017.
“The essence of living is giving,” he added.

President Joe Biden signed an executive order this week revoking former President Donald Trump’s order providing federal funds to apprenticeship programs created by industries, calling for more government-controlled alternatives.
“Registered Apprenticeships,” approved by the government, have been part of U.S. labor policy for decades. Under the Obama administration, these received more funding. But critics argued that the government-controlled model, run by the Department of Labor and with the involvement of labor unions, held back the growth of apprenticeships. The Trump order allowed industries (and unions) to develop their own programs, within regulations but independent of government control.
The Biden White House described his new policy as “expanding registered apprenticeship programs,” with a view to training “diverse, local, well-trained workers who have a choice to join a union.”

The remains of a Virginia teen who vanished in 2013 have been discovered, local authorities confirmed.
Alexis Tiara Murphy, 17, of Nelson County, went missing on Aug. 3, 2013, after visiting a gas station in the town of Lovingston, the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office said.
Since then, authorities periodically continued searching — until they discovered her remains on private property near Stagebridge Road, along Route 29 in Lovingston, on Dec. 3, police said this week.
“Our family is so grateful for the continuing love, support and prayers for Alexis and our family over the past 7 years,” Murphy’s family said in a statement issued to the police department. “While we have been grieving the loss of Alexis since 2013, we remained hopeful that she would be found alive.
