Knew a guy who was on the Pinto design team. They tried everything from Mil spec tank bladders, to absurdly overbuilt surrounding structure.

 

There was simply not enough crush zone to protect the tank. Nothing could be done except extending the tail... and making it, basically, a Maverick.

 

Trust me, they tried... that car was selling like crazy, until those girls burned to death.

Pretty much. He had analyzed a lot of wrecks of other brands, and their small stuff didn't do much better (if at all). Saw some heartbreaking stuff.

 

Mass is still your best insurance.

People wanted something nimble, with good mileage. There is a statistical price to pay for every advantage.
