Vatican supports waiving patent protections for Covid-19 vaccine
Vatican joins several developing nations in trying to speed up production of vaccines, drugs and equipment

The Vatican threw its support behind an effort by India, South Africa and a host of developing nations to loosen international patent protections and speed up sub-licensing agreements for the production of COVID-19 vaccines, pharmaceuticals and personal protective equipment.
"Despite the billions of taxpayer dollars invested in R&D (research and development), and announcements that Covid-19 vaccines should be considered a public good, no government has openly made such a public commitment," Archbishop Ivan Jurkovic said Feb. 23.
The archbishop, who is the Vatican representative to U.N. agencies in Geneva, spoke at a meeting of the World Trade Organization's Council for Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights.
"Most countries of the world are experiencing delays in vaccine rollout programs," the archbishop said. "Such situations have resulted from insufficient product manufacturing and the consequent lack of availability of the required number of vaccine doses. On the other hand, in many countries, a large number of manufacturing facilities, with proven capacity to produce safe and effective vaccines, are unable to utilize those capacities" because of the patents and other intellectual-property protections.
The international TRIPS (Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights) agreement, he said, has proven to be too cumbersome to facilitate sub-licensing.
In addition, he said, the agreement's "flexibilities allow limited policy space for public health, but they never were designed to address a global health crisis, such as the one we are experiencing at present."
"Granting a waiver from the implementation, application and enforcement" of specified sections of the agreement in order to prevent, contain or treat Covid-19 "would be a strong signal demonstrating real commitment and engagement and thus moving from declaration to action in favor of the entire human family," Archbishop Jurkovic said.
Ten developing countries, responding to criticism of the waiver request, sought to address the objection that the patent protections promote innovation by rewarding companies that invest in research and development.
"Never has there been a weaker case for the granting of monopolies," said the response by Bolivia and nine other nations. "Governments have been funding the development of Covid drugs and vaccines, and no company is able to meet the global demand."
"Governments must attach strings to any public money given for Covid-19 medical tools to guarantee that, if they prove safe and effective, they are available to everyone," the response continued. "Some conditions had been set on companies, but none of it goes far enough to ensure that IP (intellectual-property) rights assigned to companies benefiting from taxpayer money do not abuse such rights down the line."
As the World Trade Organization was debating, the Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Union and Caritas Europe issued a statement calling for: a quicker vaccination rollout in Europe, including in Europe's poorer countries; opening up manufacturing possibilities in more countries; and a greater sharing of European vaccine resources with poor countries around the world.
"We urge the European Union to promote wide-scale vaccination not only for Europe's own safety and protection, but also for global public health as a public good, benefiting people living in poorer nations as much as they benefit people living in countries with the resources to create and produce the vaccines," the statement said. "Ensuring vaccine access for all that they are available and affordable is a global moral urgency."

Stanislav Lunev (Russian: Станислав Лунев; born 1946 in Leningrad) is a former Soviet military officer, the highest-ranking GRU officer to defect from Russia to the United States.
Stanislav Lunev was born in Leningrad, to the family of a Soviet Army officer. He graduated from the Suvorov Military School in Vladikavkaz and then from Joint Arms High Command Military Academy.[1] He then worked as a GRU intelligence officer in Singapore in 1978, in China from 1980, and in the United States from 1988. He defected to US authorities in 1992. Since then, he has worked as a consultant to the FBI and the CIA.[2]
Writings
Lunev published a book of memoirs, Through the Eyes of the Enemy.[1] In the book, he described his work as a Soviet spy. He said that his work was extremely successful because he followed a very basic rule that "the best spy will be everyone's best friend, not a shadowy figure in the corner."
In the book, he also described some active measures against the "Main adversary" and alleged that "the GRU and the KGB helped to fund just about every antiwar movement and organization in America and abroad." According to Lunev, the Soviet Union allegedly spent more money on funding of U.S. anti-war movements during the Vietnam War than on funding and arming the Viet Cong forces.[1]
Nuclear sabotage operations
Lunev is mostly known for his description of nuclear sabotage operations that have allegedly been prepared by the KGB and GRU against the western countries. It was known from other sources that large arms caches were hidden by the KGB in many countries for these planned activities. They were booby-trapped with "Lightning" explosive devices. One such cache, which was identified by Vasili Mitrokhin, exploded when Swiss authorities tried to remove it from woods near Bern. Several others caches were removed successfully.[3]
Lunev asserted that some of the hidden caches could contain portable tactical nuclear weapons known as RA-115 "suitcase bombs". Such bombs have been prepared to assassinate US leaders in the event of war, according to him.[4] Lunev states that he had personally looked for hiding places for weapons caches in the Shenandoah Valley area[1] and that "it is surprisingly easy to smuggle nuclear weapons into the US, either across the Mexican border or using a small transport missile that can slip undetected when launched from a Russian airplane.[1]
US Congressman Curt Weldon supported claims by Lunev but noted that Lunev had "exaggerated things" according to the FBI.[5] Searches of the areas identified by Lunev, who admitted that he never planted any weapons in the US, have been conducted, "but law-enforcement officials have never found such weapons caches, with or without portable nuclear weapons."[6]
Poisoning of Potomac River
According to Lunev, a probable scenario in the event of war would have been poisoning the Potomac River with chemical or biological weapons, "targeting the residents of Washington, D.C."[1] He also considered it "likely" that GRU operatives placed "poison supplies near the tributaries to major US reservoirs."[7]
Those allegations have been confirmed by former SVR officer Kouzminov,[8] who was responsible for transporting pathogens from around the world for Soviet program of biological weapons in the 1980s and the early 1990s. He described a variety of biological warfare acts that would be carried out on the order of the Russian President in the event of hostilities, including poisoning public drinking-water supplies and food processing plants.[9]

Tucker Carlson Can’t Find QAnon’s Website. We're Here to Help.
The Fox News host claimed without evidence that the conspiracy theory is a hoax made up by the liberal media.

Tucker Carlson needs some new researchers.
“We spent all day trying to locate the famous QAnon, which in the end we learned is not even a website,” Carlson, the host of the highest-rated program in U.S. cable news history, told millions of viewers on Tuesday night. “If it’s out there, we could not find it.”
Carlson made the comment during a segment in which he claimed the cult, which believes that former President Donald Trump is secretly working to uncover a global satanic child sex trafficking ring, and has ensnared millions of Americans, is a hoax made up by the liberal media. And despite repeatedly referencing QAnon on his show in recent weeks, Carlson’s crack squad of researchers apparently couldn’t find any evidence it existed online.
It’s true the website QAnon.com doesn’t exist, and neither does QAnon.net or Qanon.org.
But a Google search for “QAnon” returns just shy of 25 million related webpages, and many of them would have pointed Carlson and his team in the direction of 8kun, the website where the pseudonymous leader of the cult, known only as Q, has posted almost 5,000 messages.
Or to one of the dozens of websites that are trying to cash in on QAnon’s popularity by cataloging those posts.
Facebook and Twitter have removed a lot of the major QAnon accounts in recent months, but maybe Carlson’s team could have looked a little further, to say Telegram, which has become a hive of QAnon activity, and some of the biggest QAnon channels have hundreds of thousands of followers.
Or what about Gab, the far-right social network that has also become a major hub for QAnon influencers kicked off other platforms? It’s not like Carlson could say he doesn’t know about the platform, since he hosted its CEO on his show in 2017, defending it as a place for “people who just believe in free speech.”
Carlson’s researchers also seemed to ignore Parler, where Carlson has a verified account — though he’s yet to post anything.
Parler, which has risen from the dead in recent weeks after being de-platformed for helping coordinate the Capitol riots, became a cesspit of QAnon activity in the weeks leading up to the insurrection. Many of major QAnon accounts have returned to the site after the company found new servers to host the platform.
But maybe the easiest thing for Carlson to do would have been to look at his own television segments on YouTube, where the video of him denouncing QAnon as a liberal media hoax is already posted, next to a video from last month in which he defended QAnon, mocking statements from Democratic lawmakers who said the cult was a major threat to the U.S.
He could also find videos from Fox News colleagues like Jesse Watters, Greg Gutfeld, Laura Inghram, and the hosts of “Fox & Friends,” who have all defended QAnon or given a platform to QAnon supporters.
Indeed YouTube was one of the primary vectors through which QAnon supporters have been radicalized. Numerous family members of QAnon believers told VICE News how they watched their loved ones fall down the rabbit hole by watching an endless stream of videos on the platform.
YouTube tried to address this problem by altering its algorithm in 2019 to recommend fewer extremist videos, but a new report from Pendulum, a company that tracks misinformation on YouTube, suggests this change had little impact on the popularity of QAnon videos.
According to the report, online QAnon channels received over 1 billion views on their videos in 2020, including 900 million on YouTube alone — a rise of 38% over 2019.
