Iona College basketball announcer hit with federal child porn charges

The “voice of Iona College basketball” has been hit with “deeply disturbing” child pornography charges, federal prosecutors announced Wednesday.

Rich Leaf, 72, a retired teacher and a member of the Westchester County Sports Hall of Fame, is accused of receiving lewd images of minors by creating at least a dozen screen names in an online chat room, the US Attorney’s Office in the Southern District said in a press release.

He is charged with one count of receiving child pornography, prosecutors said.

“As we allege in this case, Mr. Leaf used Skype to chat with his victims,” FBI Assistant Director William Sweeney said in a statement. “I’d like to stress to parents that, although these contacts may occur in a virtual world, they harm your children in the real world.”

According to a federal complaint, Leaf used the name “Alex Bronson” to convince a 15-year-old boy to send him nude and shower photos — among nearly a dozen images the FBI says it found on his computer at his home in Somers.

Leaf has been involved in Westchester County high school athletics for decades, and is a longtime announcer for the Iona College Gaels — identifying himself on his Twitter page as the “Voice of Iona College Basketball.”

He is a retired Harrison middle school social studies teacher.

In a statement, Iona Director of Athletics Matthew Glovaski noted that Leaf is not a college employee but an outside contractor hired to call games — and described the allegations as “disturbing.”

“Iona College has learned of disturbing allegations involving an individual who was contracted to announce basketball games for the past several years,” Glovaski said. “At this time, none of the allegations have any association with the College. Iona takes all allegations of misconduct seriously, including against vendors.”

Leaf did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Post on Wednesday.

However, he told lohud.com that he did not know how the images landed on his computer and suggested that he had been hacked.

“They stem from a hacking of my computer,” he told the news outlet. “I really don’t know how it was done.”

But asked if he had posed as a teenager online, he said “there is some truth in it, yes.”

Leaf was released on a $100,000 bond, prosecutors said.

FEDS: PA Man Had Tens of Thousands of Images and Movies of Child Sexual Exploitation

ERIE, Pa. – A former resident of Erie, Pennsylvania, pleaded guilty in federal court to charges of violating federal laws relating to the sexual exploitation of children.

Adam Gregory Ryzinski, 42, pleaded guilty to two counts.

Officials say Ryzinski “received and possessed tens of thousands of computer images and movies depicting prepubescent minors, as young as infants and toddlers, being sexually abused.”

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.

A judge scheduled sentencing for June 24, 2021. The law provides for a total sentence of 40 years in prison, a fine of $500,000, or both.

DEA rolls out Operation Engage: New strategy focuses on specific drug threats

Today, the United States Drug Enforcement Administration launched a new comprehensive law enforcement and prevention initiative aimed at reducing drug use, abuse, and overdose deaths. “Operation Engage” allows participating field divisions to focus on the biggest drug threat and resulting violence in their respective geographic areas. The initiative replaces DEA’s 360 Strategy, which aimed its resources specifically at opioids, and allows field divisions to customize plans and direct resources to target the drug that presents the greatest threat to public health and safety in their jurisdictions. DEA Miami Field Division submitted one of the 11 proposals approved in the initial round of funding and will focus its Operation Engage efforts on opioids.

“South Florida communities continue to be plagued by the opioid crisis and addiction.” said DEA’s Miami Field Division Special Agent in Charge Keith Weis. “Working closely with our law enforcement and community partners, DEA is committed to providing assistance and resources to communities to achieve the following goals.”

Identify the drugs that affect individuals and families in the designated areas

Identify evidence-informed strategies that best fit community needs

Identify and eliminate local drug threats in every field division

Support and contribute to local drug use prevention efforts

Bridge local public safety and public health efforts

Build on the success of DEA 360 and expand Operation Engage nationwide in 2022

Recent statistics released by the Centers for Disease Control show an alarming rise in drug overdose deaths, with synthetic opioids driving record-high fatalities. The vast majority of deaths involve illicitly manufactured fentanyl, including fentanyl analogs.

Overdose deaths involving methamphetamine increased almost 35% in the past year and now exceed the number of cocaine-involved overdose deaths, which increased by 26.5%. The record number of overdose deaths represents an 18 percent increase year over year. While this increase began prior to the COVID-19 health emergency, it accelerated significantly during the first months of the pandemic. These deaths are likely linked to the co-use or contamination of cocaine and synthetic opioids.

Hitman Pleads Guilty in Maltese Journalist’s Murder

Vince Muscat, one of three men on trial for the 2017 assassination of Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, pled guilty on Tuesday to all charges against him in exchange for a 15 years prison sentence.

As part of the plea deal, Muscat agreed to cooperate with prosecutors in the murder case in which his alleged co-conspirators, the brothers George and Alfred Degiorgio, continue to deny guilt. In a related development, he will also provide information on his role in the 2015 murder of lawyer Carmel Chircop, for which he received a presidential pardon on Monday.

This sudden reversal is one of the first signs of movement in the three-years-long legal process that started with the trio’s arrest in December 2017. The three are suspected of planting the car bomb that killed one of Malta’s most famous investigative journalists, described by Politico as “a one-woman Wikileaks.”

At the time Caruana Galizia was investigating top-level corruption in Malta’s “Golden Passports” investment program, which came after her Panama Papers stories rocked the country by alleging the involvement of then Prime Minister Joseph Muscat – no relation to Vince Muscat– in a money laundering and kickbacks scheme.

The former stepped down in January last year after nearly 20,000 people protested in the capital, Valletta, and demanded his resignation. This came mere months after the resignations of his Chief of Staff, Economy Minister and Tourism Minister, and was swiftly followed by the resignation of Malta’s police chief for allegedly leaking information to a middleman involved in Caruana Galizia’s assassination.

Hours apart from Vince Muscat’s lawyer entering a guilty plea on Tuesday, Maltese police also raided an undisclosed location and arrested three men alleged to have provided the car bomb that killed Caruana Galizia: Adrian and Robert Agius and Jamie Vella.

They were among seven others previously arrested alongside Muscat and the Degiorgio brothers in 2017 but released without charges.

Yet while Muscat’s guilty plea may undermine the legal defenses of both the Degiorgio brothers and their newly arrested alleged bomb suppliers, it is unlikely to touch the main suspect in the journalist’s assassination – Maltese businessman Yorgen Fenech – let alone the higher powers above him.

Navy personnel arrested Fenech trying to leave Malta in late 2019 and charged him with murder and participation in a criminal organization. He continues to plead not guilty.

A statement delivered in court by a lawyer representing Caruana Galizia’s family expressed “the hope that this step will begin to lead to full justice for Daphne Caruana Galizia,” a person whose legacy continues to animate countless others across the world.

Georgia GOP Senate Passes Bill Requiring ID for Absentee Voting

The Georgia Senate passed legislation last night requiring an ID with absentee voting.

The bill passed 35-18 and is a huge win for election integrity in the red state that saw their votes stolen in the 2020 election.

John Fredericks broke this news Wednesday morning on The War Room with Steve Bannon.

John Fredericks: Last night the Georgia GOP led senate passed a bill requiring absentee ID – identification for all absentee ballots. They passed this. It was SB67. They passed it 35-18 along party lines. That means if you send in an absentee ballot… now you have to have a photo ID. You have to send in your ID picture. You have to have a Georgia ID, license or government-issued license on the absentee ballot. This was a huge win. The vote was initiated by Republican Senator Larry Walker… Without the deplorables in Georgia this never would have happened.

This segment aired 2 minutes into the show on Wednesday.

Fight erupts over Defence moves to sack special forces whistleblowers

A small number of special forces soldiers who blew the whistle on alleged war crimes at an official inquiry have been issued termination notices against the advice of the military watchdog.

The notices have set up a clash between the military hierarchy and the Inspector-General of the Australian Defence Force, whose most senior war crimes investigator, Justice Paul Brereton, recommended in his recent report that whistleblowers who had done nothing wrong should be promoted while witnesses who had honestly disclosed their own wrongdoing should not necessarily be sacked.

“It is crucial that their careers be seen to prosper,” Justice Brereton wrote last November of key witnesses who had engaged in no wrongdoing.

Others who had committed alleged war crimes themselves but had later helped the truth come out by giving truthful testimony to the inquiry, should be given special consideration, he wrote.

As the Defence Force continues to deal with the fallout of the Inspector-General’s report, delegates of the Chief of the Army Rick Burr have moved to sack at least three whistleblowers from the Special Air Service Regiment and commandos.

Asked about this process, a Defence spokesperson said: “The fact that some individuals assisted the inquiry is not disputed and regardless of any recommendation the inquiry made, it is ultimately a matter for Defence as to what if any administrative action is taken.”

Becerra Falsely Claims He ‘Never Sued Any Nuns’

President Joe Biden's pick to lead the Department of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra misleadingly claimed he never took legal action against religious orders during his confirmation hearing Wednesday.

"I have never sued any nuns. I have taken on the federal government, but I've never sued any affiliation of nuns, and my actions have always been directed at the federal agencies because they have been trying to do things that are contrary to the law in California," Becerra said in response to a question from Sen. John Thune (R., S.D.). "It's my job to defend the rights of my state and uphold the law."

Becerra took legal action on a number of occasions over the course of his tenure as California attorney general that resulted in him facing off against the Little Sisters of the Poor, a Catholic order of nuns. The legal conflicts involved the Affordable Care Act's contraceptive mandates, which the Little Sisters objected to in court.

The Little Sisters attempted to obtain an exemption to the contraceptive coverage mandate because it violated their religious beliefs. They became locked in a years-long legal struggle with the Obama administration over the issue, which made its way to the Supreme Court.

The Trump administration attempted to resolve the situation by issuing an exemption to the coverage mandate for religious conscience reasons. But Becerra, as attorney general of California, joined Pennsylvania attorney general Josh Shapiro in suing the administration in 2017 over the guidelines that exempted religious employers from contraceptive coverage mandates. He sued again in 2019, objecting to the Little Sisters receiving an exemption under the mandate.

After lower courts ruled against the Little Sisters, the order twice appealed their case to the Supreme Court. The High Court ruled in their favor by a 7-2 margin in July 2020. But during his presidential campaign Biden pledged to revisit the legal battle.

Sen. Tom Cotton (R., Ark.) criticized Becerra's claim."Xavier Becerra did sue nuns. Like all bullies, he’s just embarrassed now that he has been confronted. That’s why he’s trying to deny it," Cotton told the Washington Free Beacon. "Becerra also sued crisis pregnancy centers, investigative journalists, and others he perceived as his enemies. Xavier Becerra is unfit to lead HHS."

Becerra made the claim in front of the Senate Finance Committee during his second round of Senate hearings. Republicans and other conservative groups have been highly critical of Becerra's track record on religious liberty, abortion, and health care. The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, which Becerra appeared in front of Tuesday, could meet as early as next week to send his nomination to the Senate floor for a vote.
