Boston halts advanced school program over ‘equity’ concerns after study finds it has too many ‘white and Asian’ students

Public schools in Boston, Massachusetts are suspending new enrollment in an advanced study program citing concerns over “inequities” that supposedly emerged during the Covid-19 pandemic and the need to be more “antiracist.”

Fourth-graders hoping to get into the Advanced Work Classes (AWC) program are out of luck, after Boston Public Schools Superintendent Brenda Cassellius called for a one-year hiatus for the program this week. The district’s website now says “admission information will be available during the winter of 2021.”

“There's been a lot of inequities that have been brought to the light in the pandemic that we have to address,” Cassellius told WGBH, the local public radio, on Friday. “There's a lot of work we have to do in the district to be antiracist and have policies where all of our students have a fair shot at an equitable and excellent education.”

Business interests have labeled it a stealth attack by pro-union forces. Most would-be GOP opponents of it on Capitol Hill were in the dark until it was too late – many still are. A provision in the sprawling $2.2 trillion relief legislation, which lawmakers rushed through Congress to help workers and employers in an economy cratering from a global pandemic, would impose a gag rule on mid-sized businesses when it comes to union efforts to organize workers.

Businesses with between 500 and 10,000 employees that take a government loan under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act would be forced to remain neutral when a union tries to organize their workers.

The Catholic Church’s actions during World War II have long been a matter of historical debate

Pope Pius XII led the Catholic Church during the tumult of World War II, but his silence on the fate of the millions of Jews killed during the Holocaust has clouded his legacy with controversy.

To critics, the pontiff’s refusal to publicly condemn the Nazis represents a shameful moral failing with devastating consequences. In his polarizing 1999 biography of Pius, British journalist John Cornwell argued that the religious leader placed the papacy’s supremacy above the plight of Europe’s Jews, winning a modicum of power—and protection from the rising threat of communism—by becoming “Hitler’s pope” and pawn. Supporters, however, say that Pius’ silence was calculated to prevent German retaliation and ensure the continued success of the Catholic Church’s behind-the-scenes efforts to aid victims of Nazi persecution.

Documentation related to the pope’s wartime activities has long been housed in the Vatican Archives, which remained largely closed to researchers until earlier this year. Now, historians examining newly opened files from the vast collections say they’ve found evidence, detailed in German weekly Die Ziet, that suggests Pius learned of the mass slaughter of Jews in fall 1942. The papers also indicate that, on the advice of an advisor who dismissed the reports as exaggerated, the pontiff told the United States government that the Vatican was unable to confirm news of Nazi crimes.
