We're not saying this is inspired by recent events that fill us with terror and insomnia, but we are saying that if you happen to relate to that feeling, here's a list of very cathartic movies about virus outbreaks to get you through it. Whether you want realism, fantasy, horror or maybe computer stuff, we have you covered. Feel free to take a personal day and not leave the house while you watch. And, before you ask: This whole gallery could have been nothing but zombie movies, so we decided to limit things to just Zombie movies that make the disease aspect front and center.

Why Can’t I Stop Watching Pandemic Movies?

The Day After Tomorrow, Contagion, Cloverfield—this is how I'm social distancing.

I did something strange the moment I realized how serious the coronavirus pandemic was: I googled “best virus movies” and proceeded to watch almost all of them. Contagion, 28 Days Later, Cabin Fever. I couldn’t stop, and I don’t know why. Maybe these epidemic movies are making what’s actually happening in real life seem less scary. Perhaps the coronavirus has just unleashed this obsession I have with the apocalypse. Either way, my queue is filled to the brim with pandemic movies.

I’m not alone in this. The 2011 movie Contagion—which most closely mirrors our situation with the coronavirus, albeit an extreme case—has seen a massive uptick in streaming. And I don’t think fascination with epidemic movies is going to dwindle any time soon. If you find yourself in the same boat as me, then this guide, below, of the best virus movies should come in handy. Social distancing isn’t so bad when you have a solid (and themed) film lineup.

Predictive Programming, or When Movies 'Predict' Real Events

By: Diana Brown | Jun 22, 2018

A few days after 9/11, rumors started circulating that action hero Jackie Chan had barely escaped with his life. He had been slated to begin shooting a movie called "Nosebleed," which involved a terrorist plot to fly a plane into either the Statue of Liberty or the World Trade Center, depending on who you talk to. The rumor was that Chan was supposed to have been shooting it the morning of the attacks, which would have put him on the roof when the planes hit. That turned out not to be true. He was still working on a different movie, and "Nosebleed" got canceled. But the topic of the movie was real, and it made people wonder: How did the screenwriters know that this could happen? Did they predict these events?

As it turns out, there's a whole theory about the power of media to predict and prepare us for the future. It's called predictive programming, and it encompasses not just terrorist attacks but new technologies and the existence of aliens.

How plausible is this theory? Are we really in danger of placidly tolerating any changes that those in charge wish to make, simply because of the media we consume? Stuff They Don't Want You To Know hosts Ben Bowlin and Matt Frederick take on all these questions and more in their episode "What Is Predictive Programming?"
