I've just started researching dyes. Very interesting so far. Mayan Blue has some very interesting qualities. They've done some serious research on it's optical and nano qualities.
Red and Purple dyes were also important but I haven't delved into them yet.
I wonder if the reason dyes were a major commodity in almost all cultures was for their optical properties as well as their color.
