Law enforcement calls hire 'slap in the face'

Los Angeles's Democratic district attorney elevated a close political ally who has referred to the city's police as "barbarians." Law enforcement officials are now criticizing D.A. George Gascón for hiring someone they say is unqualified for her position.

Gascón, who became the California city's district attorney last December, confirmed this week that he hired campaign aide Tiffiny Blacknell to be a high-ranking deputy district attorney. Blacknell worked as a public defender and has no experience as a prosecutor, and her hiring has sparked immediate pushback by law enforcement members who view the hiring as "blatant cronyism."

"I think it's a slap in the face to all of our members who are patiently waiting for a promotion," Eric Siddall, vice president of the city's prosecutors' union, told Fox 11 Los Angeles, which was first to report on Blacknell's hiring. "This is really about political cronyism rather than someone who actually meets the qualification standards."

Blacknell, who served on Gascón's policy committee during his campaign, joins Gascón's office as a Grade 4 prosecutor—the second-highest grade a prosecutor can attain; in this role, she can make up to $15,000 a month. Gascón elevated her even though she lacks the required two years of experience as a Grade 3 prosecutor, prompting some Los Angeles cops to call the arrangement "blatant cronyism."

L.A. Ordered to Pay NRA Six Figures After Losing First Amendment Case

City will pay gun-rights group about $150,000 for lawsuit over unconstitutional ordinance

A federal court ordered Los Angeles to hand over more than $100,000 to the National Rifle Association after ruling that the city had violated the gun-rights group's First Amendment rights.

Federal district court judge Stephen Wilson struck down a city ordinance aimed at punishing prospective contractors with ties to the NRA as an infringement on the right to free speech and association. On Tuesday, he ordered city officials to pay for the Second Amendment group's attorney fees, which totaled nearly $150,000.

"In this case, the text of the Ordinance, the Ordinance's legislative history, and the concurrent public statements made by the Ordinance’s primary legislative sponsor evince a strong intent to suppress the speech of the NRA," Wilson ruled in December. "Even though the Ordinance only forces disclosure of activity that may not be expressive, the clear purpose of the disclosure is to undermine the NRA’s explicitly political speech."

The NRA filed suit against the ordinance shortly after it was implemented in April 2019. Amy Hunter, a spokeswoman for the NRA, told the Washington Free Beacon the rulings prove the city unfairly targeted the group because of its advocacy.

UN is transporting 25,000 asylum seekers to US from Mexico

Agencies at the United Nations have launched efforts this week to transport 25,000 asylum seekers back to the United States after being made to stay in Mexico under the Trump administration’s Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP).

According to a press release from the UN Refugee Agency on Wednesday, the tens of thousands of asylum seekers have active immigration cases in the U.S., but were returned to wait in Mexico under the MPP program. The UN agencies’ action comes after the U.S. and Mexican governments requested UN assistance with migrant re-entry.

The Refugee Agency began in-person registration of nearly 750 people from the camp in Matamoros on Wednesday, and the first group was expected to be approved to enter the U.S. by the end of the week.

Priest: Joe Biden Is ‘Most Aggressively Anti-Catholic President in History’

Joe Biden is the “most aggressively anti-Catholic President in history” despite his outward show of piety, Virginia priest and director of Human Life International, Father Jerry Pokorsky, states.

“For most of his political life — from his consistent pro-abortion record to his officiating at a gay wedding in 2016 — despite his Catholic affiliation and public pious practices, Joe Biden has magnified and institutionalized countless major violations of the Ten Commandments,” Father Pokorsky writes in an essay Friday.

“The hypocrisy rivals that of the chief priests and Pharisees and is worthy of the same condemnation,” the priest declares. “Indeed, Biden is the most aggressively anti-Catholic President in history.”

The reason for the harsh assessment of Biden’s record is the dichotomy between his outward show of piety on the one hand and his record of supporting evil on the other, Pokorsky notes, adding that “Biden’s habitual and unapologetic sinful acts are on full display.”

“The next Republican that tells me I’m not religious I’m going to shove my rosary beads down their throat,” Biden said in 2005, and yet being a faithful Catholic means much more than carrying a rosary, the priest declares.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen told her G20 colleagues Friday that Washington is dropping a push for a controversial provision in a global digital tax, opening the door to a likely agreement.

The US shift — part of a broader repositioning by President Joe Biden from the "America First" agenda of former President Donald Trump — prompted immediate praise from Germany and France, which said a deal was now "within reach" following the US pivot.

Yellen announced at the G20 finance ministers meeting that US officials "will engage robustly" in the talks and "is no longer advocating for 'safe harbor' implementation of Pillar 1," a Treasury official told AFP.

The Trump administration had insisted on a so-called safe harbor clause in the OECD tax that effectively would have allowed big tech companies to comply voluntarily, blocking progress on a deal.

Majority of Republicans Believe 2020 Election was Invalid According to New Poll

The poll finds that 2/3 of republicans believe the election was invalid.

Democrat policians can continue to pretend the 2020 election was fair.

Oklahoma House Passes Bill Allowing State to Review, Reject Biden Executive Orders

The Oklahoma House of Representatives passed a bill Thursday that would allow the state to put the brakes on the power of President Joe Biden’s executive orders there.

HB 1236 would allow the Oklahoma state legislature to review each executive order and determine if the order should be given to the Oklahoma attorney general, who would determine if it is allowed under the U.S. Constitution.

If the attorney general deemed an executive order unconstitutional, the bill seems to indicate the attorney general could sue for a court order invalidating the executive order.

If the attorney general decides not to take action on an order, the legislature could conduct a majority vote declaring it unconstitutional.

If the legislature invokes its option to declare an executive order unconstitutional, the statute is unclear whether the Oklahoma government would file suit or the state would ignore the order inside the state, leaving it to the federal government to enforce or try to take it to court.

Stephen Miller, former senior adviser to former President Donald Trump, told Fox News on Sunday that a new immigration bill proposed by Democrats would “fundamentally erase the very essence of America’s nationhood.”

On Feb. 18, Democrats formally introduced President Joe Biden’s new immigration bill that provides an eight-year pathway to citizenship for about 11 million illegal immigrants and sweeping changes to Trump’s immigration and border policy.

The bill, named the U.S. Citizenship Act 2021, was cosponsored by Rep. Linda Sánchez (D-Calif.) and Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.).

“I’ve laid out my vision for what it’ll take to reform our immigration system and I look forward to working with leaders in Congress to get this done,” Biden said in a statement.
