Once that is/was violated,
all bets are/were off.
One sin leads/led to another,

it is no longer titillating enough,
rebellious enough.
Like a drug to which one is accustomed,
no longer producing the desired effect,
it must be elevated to the next step to achieve the thrill.
Thus,
fornication leads to the next level,

etc.
This is not to say some won't be satisfied with "mere" fornication between opposite sexes
(which is certainly an accepted norm in society,
and woe to those who dare rebuke it),
but that the general population will be affected to accept the resulting increments.
